Second Chronicles 21–22 shows how quickly a godly legacy can be damaged when one generation turns away from the Lord.

Jehoshaphat had sought God, taught His Word throughout Judah, strengthened the nation, and led the people in prayer.

But his son Jehoram chose a very different path.

Jehoram murdered his brothers, followed the wicked practices of the house of Ahab, embraced idolatry, and led Judah away from God.

His son Ahaziah continued in much the same direction because he surrounded himself with ungodly influences and accepted wicked counsel.

These chapters are filled with rebellion, violence, judgment, family destruction, and political chaos.

Yet they also contain an important message of hope.

Even while wicked leaders were destroying almost everything around them, God preserved the family line through which His covenant promises would ultimately continue.

A young child named Joash was hidden and protected while Athaliah attempted to destroy the royal family.

These chapters teach us that a godly heritage must be personally embraced, wrong relationships can corrupt good foundations, leadership choices affect entire families and communities, and God remains faithful even when people become unfaithful.

  • “Listen to God and Trust Him”

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

Second Chronicles 18–20 shows Jehoshaphat learning important lessons about relationships, counsel, leadership, prayer, and dependence upon God.

Chapter 18 records Jehoshaphat’s dangerous alliance with King Ahab of Israel. Jehoshaphat asks for a word from the Lord, but Ahab surrounds himself with prophets who tell him exactly what he wants to hear. Only Micaiah speaks the truth.

Chapter 19 shows Jehoshaphat returning home after nearly losing his life. God sends Jehu to rebuke him for helping the wicked. Jehoshaphat accepts correction and then strengthens Judah spiritually by appointing judges and reminding them to judge in the fear of the Lord.

Chapter 20 brings one of the greatest moments of faith in Scripture. A massive coalition comes against Judah. Jehoshaphat is afraid—but instead of forming another ungodly alliance, he seeks God.

    Judah fasts.

    Jehoshaphat prays.

    God speaks.

    The people worship.

And the Lord fights the battle.

These chapters teach us to choose relationships carefully, listen to truth even when it is uncomfortable, receive correction humbly, seek God before acting, and remember that some battles can only be won by depending completely upon Him.

  • “Trust God and Teach His Word”

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

Second Chronicles 16–17 places two very different spiritual pictures beside one another.

Chapter 16 shows the later years of King Asa. Earlier, Asa had cried out to God when facing an army of one million men, and God gave him victory.

But later, when King Baasha of Israel threatened Judah, Asa chose a different approach.

Instead of seeking the Lord, he relied on a political alliance with Ben-Hadad king of Syria.

The plan appeared to work—but God was displeased because Asa had stopped depending upon Him.

When the prophet Hanani confronted Asa, the king did not humble himself. He became angry, imprisoned the prophet, and oppressed some of the people.

Chapter 17 then introduces Asa’s son Jehoshaphat.

Jehoshaphat strengthened Judah, sought God, removed idolatry, and did something especially important:

He sent teachers throughout the nation with the Book of the Law of the Lord.

These chapters teach us that past faith does not guarantee present faithfulness, human solutions must never replace dependence upon God, correction should be received humbly, and spiritual strength grows when God’s Word is taught throughout the community.

REFERENCE TO THE PRIOR DAY’S READING

In 2 Chronicles 14–15, Asa began his reign by doing what was good and right before God.

He removed idols, commanded Judah to seek the Lord, and used ten years of peace to strengthen the nation.

Then Zerah the Ethiopian came against Judah with an army of one million men.

    Asa cried out:

God could help those with many or those with no power.

    Asa declared:

    “We rest on You.”

God gave Judah a tremendous victory.

Then the prophet Azariah encouraged Asa to remain strong and continue seeking God.

Asa responded by removing more idols, repairing the altar, gathering the nation, and leading Judah into covenant renewal.

The people sought God with their whole heart, and He gave them rest.

Second Chronicles 16 now gives us a warning: a man who once depended completely upon God can later begin depending upon himself.

Second Chronicles 17 shows how Jehoshaphat began strengthening Judah by seeking God and teaching His Word.

  • “Seek God and Be Strong”

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

Second Chronicles 14–15 records a powerful period of spiritual renewal under King Asa.

Asa became king after Abijah and chose to pursue what was good and right before the Lord. He removed idols, destroyed pagan worship sites, commanded Judah to seek God, and used a season of peace to strengthen the nation.

Then an enormous Ethiopian army came against Judah.

Asa was badly outnumbered, but instead of trusting only in military strength, he cried out to God.

The Lord gave Judah a great victory.

Chapter 15 then records a prophetic message from Azariah reminding Asa and the nation that the Lord would be with them as long as they sought Him.

Asa responded by removing idols, repairing the altar, gathering the people, and renewing their covenant commitment to God.

These chapters teach us to seek God before the crisis, use seasons of peace wisely, remove spiritual idols, remain courageous, and trust God when the opposition appears overwhelming.

  • “Humble Yourself and Trust God”

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

Second Chronicles 12–13 shows both the danger of spiritual pride and the power of depending upon God.

Chapter 12 records how Rehoboam became strong and then abandoned the law of the Lord. Success weakened his dependence upon God. As a result, Shishak king of Egypt invaded Judah and threatened Jerusalem.

When the prophet Shemaiah confronted Rehoboam and Judah’s leaders, they humbled themselves. God showed mercy, though consequences remained.

Chapter 13 then records war between Abijah of Judah and Jeroboam of Israel. Judah was badly outnumbered and eventually surrounded. But the people cried out to God, the priests sounded the trumpets, and the Lord gave Judah victory.

These chapters teach us that strength can become dangerous when it produces pride, humility opens the door to mercy, and overwhelming circumstances are never greater than the God who fights for His people.

  • ”Wisdom Must Be Obeyed”

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

Second Chronicles 9–11 moves from the height of Solomon’s glory to the painful division of the kingdom under his son Rehoboam.

Chapter 9 shows Solomon at the peak of his wisdom, wealth, influence, and international reputation. The Queen of Sheba travels to Jerusalem because she has heard about his wisdom and wants to test what she has heard.

Chapter 10 then gives us a sobering contrast.

Solomon’s son Rehoboam inherits the kingdom, but instead of following wise counsel, he listens to younger advisers who encourage him to answer the people harshly. His foolish decision helps divide the nation.

Chapter 11 shows that even after failure, obedience still matters. When Rehoboam prepares for civil war, God sends the prophet Shemaiah and tells him not to fight his own people. This time, Rehoboam listens.

These chapters teach us that possessing wisdom is not enough.

    We must listen to wisdom.

    We must obey wisdom.

    We must reject pride.

And when God corrects us, we must be willing to change direction.

Second Chronicles 7–8 records the completion of Solomon’s Temple dedication and the early success of his kingdom.

Chapter 7 begins with a dramatic response from heaven.

Chapter 8 then records Solomon building cities, organizing labor, strengthening the kingdom, completing projects, arranging worship, and maintaining order.

These chapters teach us that spiritual revival requires humility, prayer, repentance, obedience, and faithfulness.

God’s blessing must never make us careless.

  • “ God’s Presence and Prayer”

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

Second Chronicles 5–6 brings Solomon’s Temple construction to a powerful spiritual climax.

    The building is complete.

The sacred furnishings are in place.

The Ark of the Covenant is brought into the Temple.

The priests and musicians worship together in unity.

Then something happens that human craftsmanship could never produce:

The glory of the Lord fills the house of God.

The Temple was beautiful, but its greatest treasure was not gold, cedar, bronze, or architecture.

It was the presence of God.

  • “Build for God’s Glory”

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

Second Chronicles 2–4 records Solomon’s preparation for the Temple, the beginning of construction, and the creation of the sacred furnishings used in worship.

Solomon understood that the Temple was not being built to glorify himself. It was being built for the name of the Lord.

He gathered workers, materials, craftsmen, gold, bronze, timber, stone, and skilled leadership.

But Solomon also understood something greater:

No building could contain the God of heaven.

The Temple would become a place where Israel worshiped, sacrificed, prayed, remembered God’s covenant, and honored His holiness.

These chapters teach us to prepare carefully, pursue excellence, use our abilities for God’s purposes, work faithfully with others, and remember that buildings and ministries must always point beyond themselves to the glory of God.

  • “Give Freely, Seek Wisdom”

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

First Chronicles 29 closes David’s reign with worship, generosity, humility, and preparation for Solomon’s future.

David and the leaders of Israel gave willingly toward the Temple. The people rejoiced because they had offered freely to the Lord. David then prayed one of the great prayers of Scripture, acknowledging that everything ultimately belongs to God.

David died after a long reign, and Solomon took his place.

Second Chronicles 1 opens with Solomon seeking God before fully stepping into his responsibilities as king.

When God offered Solomon the opportunity to ask for what he desired, Solomon did not ask for wealth, long life, or revenge against his enemies.

    He asked for wisdom.

These chapters teach us to give willingly, remain humble about what God has entrusted to us, seek Him before making major decisions, and value wisdom above possessions.
