In the second quarter, more sectors in the main US bourses were negative than were positive, whilst larger capitalised companies with strong balance sheets continue to outperform. Meanwhile, politics was front and centre in June, with elections in India and Europe, whilst the UK & US built up to theirs (the Labour party decisively winning the UK election in July).

This months stock selection is Klabin, a leader in the paper and pulp industry, specialising in the production of sustainable paper & packaging solutions. Our ethical news section covers a range of issues, from Lidl working with WWF to reduce food waste, to BP taking a more conservative approach to clean energy.

We heard from a number of underlying solar energy companies who shed some more positive light on the sector. For professional clients only: halfway through the first quarter, we are more optimistic despite the likely to-and-fro on interest expectations in the months ahead. Data will be the key driver but its providing a mixed picture at present. Despite this, interest rate cuts are expected, although we still feel cash management will remain important moving forward.

For professional clients only. With 2023 in the rear-view mirror, the last quarter gave us something positive to cheer as we moved into the new year. The long-awaited interest rate pivot finally materialised, and as expected, this led to a significant rally across all asset classes. With some interest rate stability, risks to inflation remain. Meanwhile, corporate and government debt will be in focus, particularly those countries with elections this year such as the UK.
