For most of human history, furniture was built by hand using a small set of simple tools. This approach connects you in a profoundly direct way to the work, your effort to the result. This changed with the rise of machine tools, which made production more efficient but also altered what's made and how we think about making it in in a profound way. This talk explores the effects of automation on our work, which is as relevant to software as it is to furniture, especially now that once again, with Clojure, we are building things using a small set of simple tools.

Most new programming languages are accidentally designed to be backwards compatible with punchcards. This talk argues that it would be better to focus on building new live programming environments that can help us solve the problems of the future.

SEER 1991. Promo video for SEER 1992. Solar Energy Expo & Rally (SEER) Held in Willits and Ukiah, California, in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1994, each SEER attracted about 10,000 people over the weekend, with 300 exhibitors, 200 speakers and workshops, scores of volunteers, and dozens of experimental vehicles. It was a resounding success in terms of education, creation of a networking database, and visitors’ dollars spent locally.
