EXACTLY 20 years ago this week, I flew to China to see my brother Bryan.

We got into an argument on a bus (a story I’ve told 1000 times). He was

bailing on his missionary career and his entire Christian upbringing, and I found this deeply upsetting.

The overwhelming success of genetics and molecular biology in the 1970s had an unfortunate side effect. DNA became the 'be-all' and 'end-all' of biology, and “the selfish gene” became the new secular pop religion. Physiology and medicine suffered great blows from this shift.
