On this episode of Ex Inferis, the boys from the below tackle the expansive topic of maybe the most influential figure in metal history next to our dark lord himself, J R R Tolkien.

“Death is but a doorway, time is but a window, I’ll be back,” said Dan Aykroyd in Ghostbusters II. However, if one replaces the word ‘window’ with the number 7 and then inverts the sentence into a spiral, you will notice that the whole sentence resembles the anus of Italian mathematician, Leonardo Fibonacci.

It would be obscene to infer that Dan Aykroyd anticipated such a thing during the filming of Ghostbusters II. And because of this, we decide to discuss the new Tool record instead.

As if ordained by the Archangel Mephistopheles herself, da bois from da pits hit something of an anniversary with their latest instalment of Ex Inferis.

In an episode proportionately as long as one of their subject's songs, the tenth episode sees Matt and Tom spin yarns of yesterweek when many a metal fan was treated to the devilish delights of Yob, Godflesh and, of course, Neurosis live at Kentish Town O2 Forum.

After a few vulgar displays of poorly constructed criticism, the duo endeavour to explore the trials and tribulations of Neurosis the band. Matt delves deep into their early works and proto-Sludge influences while Tom touches on their later career, side-projects and collaborative efforts.

Oh, and there’s some general chatter over Orange Goblin’s Ben Ward and how he KO’d a kid with a single hi-five.

Like Lovecraftian shadows out of time, the bois return for the latest instalment of the show that no being knew they could live without, Ex Inferis.

Episode 9 tightens its Bible Belt a few notches and sets its ruinous gaze on the Sunshine State as Tom and Matt audit the genesis of Florida Death Metal. From the prototypical seeds sown by thrash revisionists Nasty Savage and Savatage, the show delves deep in to some of the scene’s most infinitely pressing questions such as “Was the Morbid Angel’s involvement with the ‘Satanic Panic’ a government coverup?” “How is Chuck Schuldiner so attractive?” And “Glen Benton? Just over a year ago, the metal community lost one of our most colossal innovators, Caleb Scofield. An unrestrained creative force, the bassist and singer helped in outlining the blueprint of metalcore in the late 90s in aid of his involvement with alternative metal chieftains, Cave In. A regular collaborator with Converge and Isis, Caleb’s contribution to not only his primary band’s success, but with post-hardcore experimentalists Old Man Gloom and post-sludge revisionists Zozobra, continues to resonate and influence modern players to this day.

But while his passing will never fully heal over, the boys from below, Matt and Tom take more of a celebratory retrospective of Scofield’s life and cultural impact. With Cave In’s last ever record with Caleb’s involvement, The Final Transmission, set to drop within the forthcoming weeks, let’s use this opportunity to remember a man with a bass tone like the ringing of Satan’s bells and a voice like...more ringing of Satan’s bells.
