This episode covers the idea of hostis humani generis (“enemy of all mankind”) and how it was applied to pirates. Pirates operating under the black flag were treated as outlaws beyond normal legal protections, setting up piracy as both a legal category and a justification for extreme punishment and international cooperation against pirates. It also covers pirate warfare and tactics.

This episode explains how the Dutch “Sea Beggars” emerged from the Dutch revolt against Spain and Portugal, using privateering and trade-backed warfare to challenge Iberian control of the seas and colonies during the Eighty Years’ War. Driven by Calvinist thrift, efficient shipping, and powerful trading companies like the VOC and West India Company, the Dutch expanded aggressively through contraband trade, salt and tobacco disputes, and major naval actions, including Piet Heyn’s 1628 capture of the Spanish treasure fleet. Although these successes weakened Spanish sovereignty in the Caribbean and Brazil, Dutch colonies proved costly to maintain, leading many sailors toward freelance piracy and shaping the diverse, rebellious pirate culture of the mid-17th century. 

This episode covers what happens after the disaster at San Juan de Ulúa. English activity in the Americas shifted first to outright piracy and then, after 1585, to state-sanctioned privateering, with Francis Drake emerging as the most famous figure through alliances with French corsairs, maroons, and indigenous groups against Spanish power. Drake’s raids in the Caribbean and Pacific—including his circumnavigation and capture of immense Spanish treasure—spread fear disproportionate to England’s actual strength and forced Spain to invest heavily in defenses, fleets, and fortified ports across its empire. Despite moments of spectacular success, Elizabethan piracy and privateering were risky, often unprofitable, and deadly for their leaders, ultimately declining by 1603 as Spain adapted and England remained a secondary imperial power.

this episode covers England’s break with Catholicism, which helped produce the Elizabethan “sea dogs,” merchants-turned-smugglers like John Hawkins and Francis Drake who moved from contraband slave trading to piracy and then privateering as they violently challenged Spanish and Portuguese monopolies in the Atlantic world. Hawkins’s slave-trading voyages of the 1560s relied on coercion and armed force, climaxing in the disastrous clash with Spanish authorities at San Juan de Ulúa in 1568, which exposed the high costs and limited profits of England’s early involvement in the Caribbean slave trade and pushed the English toward piracy instead. A generation later, figures like Walter Raleigh extended this aggressive overseas vision into colonization, sponsoring failed settlements such as Roanoke in the 1580s, which—despite collapse—laid ideological and practical groundwork for England’s later imperial expansion in North America. 

This episode covers the development of the African slave trade and traces its role in the colonization of the Americas. Because the slave trade was so profitable as an economic activity, pirates were drawn to slave ships, sometimes becoming slave traders and other times becoming the givers of freedom.

This episode covers how in the early 18th century, pirate ships faced constant dangers from storms, shipwrecks, and limited navigational tools, as seen in the wrecks of Sam Bellamy’s Whydah and other pirates like Charles Vane and Edward Low. Mariners relied on dead reckoning, local knowledge, captured charts, and instruments to navigate, but mistakes often led to shipwrecks or deadly encounters, highlighting the challenges of long-distance piracy. Despite these risks, pirates followed seasonal patterns and trade routes, moving between the Caribbean, North America, Africa, and the Indian Ocean, with their voyages often improvised and decisions made democratically by the crew. 

This episode covers how Spain’s defense of its American colonies relied heavily on armed convoys, the Treasure Fleet system, and taxes on merchants, but limited funding and scattered settlements meant pirates and privateers often succeeded in raiding ships and towns. Over time, fortifications, naval patrols, and organized fleets were gradually implemented, yet Spain’s power declined due to competition from the Dutch, English, and French, as well as decreasing silver production. By the late 18th century, Spain attempted reforms, including freer trade and privatized galleon management, but the Treasure Fleet system ultimately ended, marking the decline of Spanish control over its colonial wealth. 

This episode covers how Spain and Portugal emerged as leading Atlantic powers in the late 15th and 16th centuries, but their global empires quickly provoked widespread piracy and corsair activity, especially from North Africa and France, as other nations rejected the Treaty of Tordesillas and targeted Spanish treasure routes. In the Mediterranean, Barbary corsairs—most famously the Barbarossa brothers, backed by the Ottoman Empire—fought Spain in a prolonged struggle marked by raids, slavery, and ransom, while neither side achieved decisive control. In the Caribbean, French corsairs pioneered large-scale piracy against Spain’s poorly defended colonies, forcing Spain to adopt costly defensive systems that shaped the long-term pattern of piracy, contraband trade, and imperial conflict in the Americas. 

The episode explains how Spain conquered the Aztec and Inca empires through a combination of internal indigenous weaknesses, strategic alliances, military advantages like steel weapons and horses, and devastating diseases such as smallpox. Figures like Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro exploited existing political divisions, captured key rulers, and took over tribute and labor systems, leading to the collapse of highly hierarchical empires. The conquest created a vast Spanish colonial empire built on encomienda labor and silver mining, while also generating the “Black Legend” that highlighted Spanish brutality and sparked debate over the moral cost of empire. But, the vast wealth the Spanish found in the New world attracted Pirates.
