Today we’re continuing to dig into our themes from our last episode about what the period of the exiles in Babylon can teach us about breaking generational patterns and how they can speak to Gen Z and all of us. Last time we talked about the fiery furnace, today we’ll discuss a few more aspects of the time in Babylon, jump to Esther a generation later, and look at the lasting legacy that bore fruit in the time of Christ and beyond. These generations remind us that even in the midst of great darkness and societal collapse, God can be working in ways we could never imagine. So let’s allow their story to expand our imaginations!

It’s a been a minute since we’ve had an episode that was solely scripture study, so today we want to dig into some specific passages about the generation in the Old Testament that lived through the Babylonian exile. They have a lot to teach the Church and Gen Z about what it looks like to inherit a society and a Church in ruin, and how to invite the Lord to join you to give you a future and a hope. Today we’re looking at the young exiles in the book of Daniel, and in our next episode we’ll be looking at Esther and her legacy among the diaspora. There’s something about it that’s appealing to younger women, in particular, and painting traditional gender roles in a new aesthetic and often deceptive light. We’ll talk about what paved the way for this trend, what good we can find in this, and the dangers of blindly accepting this as a harmless niche trend.

February is Black History Month, an important and special season but one that can be viewed with suspicion or cynicism. Across racial lines, this month can have complicated perceptions. It is also often commodified by corporations and organizations in ways that can feel performative and hollow. So today we want to dig into the good intent of what Black History Month is about, the hard but powerful opportunity it creates for all of us, and the biblical basis for telling complicated stories with remembrance and hope.
