Though traditionally known as the Ten Commandments, the term "commandments" in this reading from Exodus occurs only in chapter 20:6. The list proclaims both law and mercy/gospel. For example, verse 20:2 says, "I am your God and rescued you out of Egypt and slavery." This is gospel. This verse sets up the "marriage" between God and His people. The first set, or "table," of four commandments (20:3-12) describes a person's actions toward God, the second set, or table (20:13-17), describes one's actions toward his fellow man. Each element is taught in a way that gives insight into the meaning of these commandments from God. This lesson is exceptional and a must listen for all Christians!
