  • Chapter 4: Card Night

Cards on the table. Stakes on the side table. And every stake comes with a story.

Out of uniform for one night, the senior officers gather in the Captain's ready room for an evening of wagers, laughter and a few well-worn legends. But one keepsake on the table carries Dr. John Mack fifteen years back, to the lush world of Decca Breea, where a young Mack and a brash Ensign Arzadon let themselves be talked into a ride straight down the inside of a mountain. What waits at the bottom will follow both of them for the rest of their lives.

  • Chapter 5: Sunset on Altos

The stakes keep coming. So do the surprises.

Card night in the Captain's ready room rolls on, and every officer's keepsake brings a story to the table: a Vulcan escutcheon, a Holcha tree from Decca Breea, and a deck of cards that seems to have a mind of its own. Then Dr. Xiana unwraps her stake, and Dr. John Mack hears words he has heard once before, word for word. A single hand of poker turns into a contest of nerve, until the bridge interrupts with news that changes the shape of the mission. And when Mack finally walks away from the table, the door to his quarters opens onto somewhere he never expected to stand again.

  • Chapter 6: The Concert Hall

Two stars. One last dance. And a ship that will not sit still.

Dr. John Mack wakes at his table to music he didn't ask for, and to a simulation that shows him something so beautiful he could spend a lifetime watching it. But BNC74 is running out of time, the briefing can't wait, and the deck beneath Mack's feet keeps tilting in ways no one else seems to mind. Between a captain's warning, a doctor with a cure he refuses to take, an old rival in a very small turbolift, and a Vulcan who has her own way of getting his attention, the day keeps pushing back. Then Mack opens the door to his quarters, and finds an orchestra waiting for its conductor.

  • Chapter 7: Warp Shell Failure

The music reaches its last great bar. Then the floor drops away.

Dr. John Mack is pulled out of the most beautiful performance of his life and into the moment he has spent his career predicting. Out past the red giant, the dying star is finally letting go, and the Solaris is not where she is supposed to be. Alarms. Failing gravity. A captain who has run out of good options, a chief engineer wrestling with something far too dangerous to drop, and a bridge full of people waiting for an answer no one wants to give. Mack has a plan. It is brilliant, it is insane, and it is going to cost someone everything. And somewhere below decks, in a room full of glowing instruments, someone is waiting for him.

  • Chapter 8: Abandon Ship

The order has been given. Now everyone has to find a way out.

Corridors strobe red. The deck tilts underfoot. Every voice on the Solaris is counting something: minutes, pods, people still unaccounted for. Dr. John Mack has done everything he promised, and it has not been enough. Somewhere a captain is making a choice no one else can make for him, and a Vulcan officer is walking against the tide toward the one place she is needed most. Then the hatch seals, the countdown begins, and Mack is alone with a stubborn computer, a failing body, and a question only a starlographer would think to ask. Far from home, an old memory comes back to him in the dark.

  • Chapter 9: Something in the Surf

Day one. A pale sky. A long, empty beach. And a life pod that should never have made it down.

Dr. John Mack has survived the unsurvivable, but only just. His pod is dead, the air of this new world is too thin to breathe, and every voice he calls for answers with static. All he has left is a glowing Tome, the sound of the surf, and the stubborn habit of a scientist who keeps observing right up to the end. Then the tide comes in, and something on this world takes notice of him.
