    Summary:

Why settle for a normal book on grammar when you could learn new things about it and become your own best self at the same time?If youre looking for a traditional manual of rules, this much-acclaimed, groundbreaking book by a cofounder of Harvard Universitys Writing Center may not be the one for you. Grammar is about much more than rules: its about choices, toosince a thought can always be expressed correctly in multiple ways.

In Grammar for a Full Life, author Lawrence Weinstein reveals how our grammatical choices either stifle or boost our sense of agency in life, creativity, depth of connection to others, and mindfulness.

Weinstein shows that certain tweaks to a persons grammar can bring consequential changes in his or her fulfillment and well-being. In this wonderfully readable book, he describes some forty transformative moves that can be made with English punctuation and syntax. Youll learn, for instance, why a greater use of active voice constructions builds assertive energy in us. Youll discover howparadoxicallycutting back on the intensifiers (exclamation marks and words like really, absolutely) heightens our awareness of the world.

There is not too much about personality and life that Weinstein doesnt see benefitting from a wiser use of grammar. In a chapter titled Bonding, even sex comes in for some grammatical attention. Even fear of death receives its own, almost lyrical chapter near books end.

No reader should be intimidated by Weinsteins university credentials. As important a book as his is, its conversational throughoutand its packed with numerous compelling, clear examples. You will never think of commas or possessive pronouns in the same way again.

[PLEASE NOTE:Grammar for a Full Life is not a book intended for the person new to the English language. It assumes familiarity with many of the basics of English.]

    Summary:

#1 bestselling author Philippa Gregory returns with a novel of greed and desire set in the poverty and glamour of Restoration London, in the golden streets of Venice, and on the tensely contested frontier of early America.

Midsummer Eve, 1670. Two unexpected visitors arrive at a shabby warehouse on the south side of the River Thames. The first is a wealthy nobleman seeking the lover he deserted twenty-one years earlier. Now James Avery has everything to offer: a fortune, a title, and the favour of the newly restored King Charles II. He believes that the warehouse’s poor owner Alinor has the one thing he cannot buy – his son and heir.

The second visitor is a beautiful widow from Venice in deepest mourning. She claims Alinor as her mother-in-law and tells her of the death of Rob – Alinor’s son – drowned in the dark tides of the Venice lagoon.

Meanwhile, Alinor’s brother Ned, in faraway New England, is making a life for himself in the narrowing space between the jarring worlds of the English newcomers and the American Indians as they move towards inevitable war. Alinor writes to him that she knows – without doubt – that her son is alive and the widow is an imposter. But how can she prove it?

Set in the poverty and glamour of Restoration London, in the golden streets of Venice, and on the tensely contested frontier of early America, this is a novel of greed and desire: for love, for wealth, for a child, and for home.

    Praise for Dark Tides:

‘Superb . . . A searing portrait of a woman that resonates across the ages.’ People

‘A gripping novel . . . Fans of Gregory’s works and of historicals in general will delight in this page-turning tale.’ Library Journal (starred review)

    Length: 04:31:51

    Language: English

    Release date: 11-15-20

    Publisher: ECW Press

    Genres: Teen, General, Tough Topics

    Summary:

The Discovery of Flight is a novel in two voices about the relationship between two sisters, the older of whom is disabled by cerebral palsy and only able to communicate with assistive technology (she can control her computer by moving her eyes). It interweaves the fantasy novel sixteen-year-old Libby is writing for Sophie's thirteenth birthday, and Sophie's diary, in which she discusses the deteriorating condition of her older sister. The book's title is also the title of Libby's novel, in which Libby takes the form of a hawk telepathically linked to a girl who, like her sister, is a good artist. Sophie's diary is in fact illustrated with the occasional black-and-white drawings. The sicker Libby gets, the more she retreats into her novel and the less she interacts with the outside world. Though the situation is tragic, Sophie's voice is extremely funny and wry. In addition, through her storytelling, Libby becomes a heroic figure rather than a helpless victim. After Libby's death, the girls' mother presents Sophie with the novel and Sophie writes its final chapter, bringing the voices of the two girls together.

    Language: English

    Release date: 11-15-20

    Publisher: ECW Press

Genres: Fiction & Literature, Literary Fiction, Family Life

    Summary:

A woman must emerge from the virtual world she's created to confront her flesh-and-blood past and family.

Growing up with a menacing drunk for a father and a grief-stricken mother, a girl spends her 1980s childhood staring at the television to escape the tension, depression, and looming violence that fill her suburban home. After winning a modelling competition, she dedicates herself to becoming a placid image onto which anything can be projected, a blank slate with a blank stare. Earning enough in Paris to retire in her twenties, she buys a studio in Montreal and retreats from the world and its perceived threats, cultivating her existence as an image through her virtual reality avatar. But when her mother develops cancer and nears the end of her life, she is forced to leave her cocoon - surrounded by her posse of augmented reality superheroes - and interact with the world and her parents without the mask of her perfect, virtual self.

Georges offers up an alienated childhood with shifting pop culture obsessions, a woman's awakening to the role of the image in culture, and her eventual isolation in her apartment and the world online. It is a catalogue of the anxieties of an age, from nuclear war to terrorism, climate change to biological warfare. Set in the past and not-too-distant future of Montreal, The Imago Stage is an ominous tale of oppression, suppression, and disembodiment.
