Autism and Parenting

Expectations

Listen Later

As parents, we often go overboard in trying to give our children the best of everything. However, knowingly, or unknowingly, we also tend to demand a lot from them. We tend to commit the same mistakes when we ourselves become parents and set unrealistic, unachievable expectations for our children. We must expect something from the child based on one’s ability, capability, and level of expertise.
As parents and caregivers, we need to understand that an associated life’s pace and must adjust accordingly. It is needed to appreciate the baby steps that one is taking toward life.
I can appreciate my son’s achievements because I tend to look for opportunities and the small tasks, he does without taking him for granted. He puts something back on the table, informs me about his needs, indicates food, and takes me to the washroom to help him these all are his everyday milestones which I celebrate.
I do not compare my son with others nor do I ask other parents about their kid's milestones for comparison. The basic rule is, Children are different and must not be loaded with expectations.
