  • Health FAQs With Dr. Gates- Stress Related Health Problems

"...and depending on how this goes we may end up doing in the first two weeks I don't know but we'll definitely do it today so I'm just going to get cut right to the chase here this seems to be a stress-related group of questions so is there a link between long-term stress of about five years and hyperthyroidism / Graves disease tell you what I'll just read this and and I'll keep my stuff out of this now I think we should turn back and forth but with Graves disease the literature does state that stress can precipitate the condition some people dispute that in the literature but overall it's pretty well accepted this stress does cause Graves disease stress is not as much identified as a trigger for Hashimoto's yet but we're anticipating that that's going to change because we hear it all the time or person goes through major stressor and then they develop Hashimoto's so just realize this is an evolving situation we don't have all the answers even here in...things are changing all the time but I just read an article this morning...and they were talking about stress as it pertains to hyperthyroidism so yes without a doubt without a doubt so next couple next to I can kind of put together how is this chronic stress response turned off and the next question is how does one stop the fight flight those are 21 in the same question so and and and if there were a simple answer to that we probably wouldn't be sitting here doing these Podcasts every tuesday and and half of America probably be taking anti-anxiety medications and antidepressants and benzodiazepines and and on and on the number one two and three drugs in America but go ahead so and this we're doing this because I think a lot of you want to know what that could solution is because you've been conditioned and today's internet marketing world that there is a quick solution for everything there's a leaky gut solution there's a stress solution and frankly that to work with the complexity of cases coming into us so certainly you could go and try to meditate you can try to do stress relaxation techniques we're not knocking any of those but the patients that come to us chronic states of fighter flight history of childhood trauma chronic stress where there's a hyperactivation component to the amygdala the amygdala is the fear Center in the brain the problem is that the fear Center can actually grow and take over other neurological real estate in the brain it's like me growing and saying well this is mine now well that's talked about birds but that's what the amygdala does and it grows into the memory area..."

  • Health FAQs With Dr. Gates- Fish Oil

"...a chiropractic physician and a board-certified functional neurologist this is Dr. Randul okay you know he's the fourth certified functional neurology we're certified Chiropractic neurologist technical way to had I ever immigrants your certified functional medicine practice can you tell I was just talking about 23 different things before we just started I was just told I don't think that disgusting fish oil the truth about fish oil this is dr. Gates this topic today he chose and why are we picking on fish oil because we're kind of sort of going to pick on fish oil not really like badly if you're taking fish oil doesn't mean I've stopped taking it but we spent a lot of time developing protocols to help people within with chronic pain issues chronic syndromes...we're going to be like emptying the oceans for fish oil and we're not going to make the point that it's not because obviously it has been proven to be useful for a variety of functions of the brain function and anti-inflammatory Sarah however in our clinical World we're responsible results and we have to use certain methods to change symptomatology to get conditions to calm down and or disappear and we haven't had maybe the greatest experience with fish oils versus saying even turmeric we've used turmeric which we don't use that often anymore but we've used to work and when we used it in high dose..."

  • Inner Tremors And Fibromyalgia - Health Faqs With Dr. Gates

"...first question is do you ever see patients who experience inner Tremors can you address what this might be all about and I would say yes we can address what this is all about we see a lot of patients with a variety of some Tremors and inner tremors are something that have a specific medical understanding for us yeah and the internal Tremors can be a number of things you could be anxiety it could be an autoimmune response your thyroid it could be hyperthyroidism it could be something like a pheochromocytoma which is where your adrenal gland has a tumor on it and makes to me adrenal hormones so all of those are possibilities for the internal Tremors we frequently see it with autoimmune thyroid disease but we see a lot of so that so that's kind of our take on anxiety a lot of anxiety those are two things I would go to those two things first I don't know yeah okay but yes can you have fibromyalgia this is a great question because it's kind of fiber understanding of fibromyalgia can you have fibromyalgia not have irritable bowel syndrome and not hurt when someone hugs you or touches you great question the understanding of what it fibromyalgia is evolve and and we've stayed on top of that Gates has done continued to stay on top of the research so I think this is an interesting question to answer for people who are confused yeah like me right so if I were myalgia we had the 1990 criteria by the American College of Rheumatology and that criteria set forth that if you have tenderness at a certain number of the trigger points 11 out of the 18 I know they team basically then you had fibromyalgia to produce 11 out of 18 and then you had other Associated symptoms of brain fog and fatigue whereas the new criteria the 2010 American College of Rheumatology criteria that came out and it's predicated on not having the trigger points you don't have to be able to termed a low zdenek allodynia constitutes pain with a normally non painful stimulus so like somebody giving you a hug so you don't have to have that pain response when somebody gives you a hug and you don't necessarily have to have IBS either in order to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia now it can't be another condition that's causing the pain it can be associate with other pain but you have widespread pain so pain and many areas of your body there's a way to document that you have other disabling symptoms of fatigue and brain fog and the fatigue and brain fog half of these severe enough to be above a certain score level for you to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia so it's really more predicated on widespread pain fatigue and brain fog and then it also factors in other Associated symptoms like IBS but you don't have to have IBS you don't have to have trigger points to have fun that you can have other gut problems like I have Celiac can write or you could just have non-celiac gluten sensitivity.."

  • Health FAQs With Dr. Gates- Pernicious Anemia

...we're just going to answer some of the questions that we haven't had a chance to answer over a long period of time and really now and then we will answer select questions that seem to be that we think a lot of people out there might be asking based on what we hear in the histories that come in based on what we hear from people who have the types of conditions that we address so the first question we're going to address today is pernicious anemia autoimmune seem to me that that one could be pretty well easily fact figured out on the internet Canada cause severe pain and tummy issues you described I think pernicious anemia is autoimmune but I think it's a very interesting thing to maybe expand on a little bit I just things that might be connected to and so is it autoimmune and it caused severe pain and tummy issues through describe the tummy guy will answer that now so relative to pernicious anemia technically it's autoimmune gastritis where the immune system is attacking your stomach with pernicious anemia specifically we have immune cells that attack intrinsic factor intrinsic factor is the product made in your stomach cells that binds the V12 so you can absorb your B12 but in that process a lot of patients have autoimmune gastritis may also have their immune system killing the parietal cells of the stomach as well and in the course of that means basically your immune system is killing your stomach just like if your immune system is killing your joints it would probably hurt a lot of patients who have autoimmune gastritis do have gastritis and stomach pain and we pick up this entity pretty frequently it's not very commonly tested for in the medical world unless you are egregious lie low and b12 that's been our experience and you also have to have a serum gastrin done as well because gastrin is a hormone made in your stomach and when your stomach is breaking down gastrin goes up that's one way to detect pernicious anemia or ottoman gastritis the answer the...

  • Health FAQs With Dr. Gates- Multiple Sclerosis

"...do you want me to just go down let's go down the so we haven't we have a long list we're not going to get through all of them we're going to spend about 15 or 20 minutes going over over these questions and we'll see how far along we get so the first one and these are quotes right off of the right off of the websites and from you so first one is a question about multiple sclerosis what is your thought on stress and multiple sclerosis so what I would say is that with most odd immune diseases what we find is that stress can be an exacerbating Factor when you look at the literature that holds true for many different conditions when it comes to Ms lots of times you'll read will stress may not be a major factor or Diet isn't a major factor but we would say in our clinical experience we disagree substantially any time an individual is under chronic stress just looking at the basic physiology of it you're going to decrease blood flow to the gas...hustle track is putting your body into a state of fight-or-flight ready to fight the line or run from it so to speak and in doing so we know the literature on Ms is robust on the gastrointestinal related to the illness meaning it has been shown that the gastrointestinal tract breaks down and patients who have MS and that leads to immune activation which is also seemingly associated with the immune activation in the brain so we would say stress can be a major component of Ms we've seen viral infections cause patients to go from you know basically secondary Progressive to primary Progressive we've seen the same thing with stress responses so stress is a major factor and if it is present not only in Ms or any other autoimmune illness it's one of the main factors that we have to address some yeah more in general if you're any type of a chronic pain patient the cliff notes on stresses when your chronic stress it can affect your brain it can cause short-term memory loss..."

...in the end you have indicated through your research and response to care that you've been treating it as an autoimmune problem for quite a while now I've been three or four or five have I for at least four I'm thinking the one specific case back to back then so at least for so so share with us the data the new data on further on the fact that it's probably an autoimmune attack against the with certain aspects of your adrenal gland yeah exactly so the original studies came out the Mayo Clinic where they attacking the adrenal receptor basically there were these adrenal receptor antibodies sometimes there were immune cells to your autonomic nervous and so that's your the system that creates your fight and flight response in your rest and digest if you go to San dot you need a fight response to get blood up to your brain because otherwise all the blood...

  • Chronic Health Condition Vs Functional Medicine - The Large Intestines

"...you start out with the largest has a lot of people don't realize that the dysbiosis all these things that they're hearing about are a lot of them are are in the and I made a mistake when I said microbiome that's more your that's more to the small intestines but but large intestines the symptoms would be feeling that balance do not empty completely so and within the framework of this entire category there are specifics a lower abdominal pain relief by gas passing store gas means we have a bacterial problem gas is a bacterial problem okay it's the breakdown of bad bacteria you can get a couple gases but if you get if you get a methane gas that's sibo and small that's a small intestinal bacterial overgrowth that can be gas that can be bloating that can be passing large amounts of foul smell you have sir has in large amounts of foul-smelling gas and you get distension after you eat there's a good chance that you might have something called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth that alternating constipation diarrhea and I first and we're treating a case we're looking at the gut and we're like okay 75% of the immune system is in the gut this person has Hashimoto's whatever it is if you have an autoimmune problem which seventy-five percent of the immune system is in they got most of you have mystery diseases you're struggling you can't figure out what's going on in and everything's normal and your doctor's time you have an autoimmune component to your condition okay so so another symptom alternating constipation and diarrhea this is called irritable bowel syndrome okay here will bowel syndrome is our alerts us to the fact that person is probably in a chronic stress response..."

  • Health FAQs With Dr. Gates- Does Heavy Metals Cause Autoimmune Disease

...So today we're going to talk about an unavoidably controversial subject and that is does heavy metals cause autoimmune disease and it's it's and the reason I say that is I do all the intakes here and so I hear the patient's histories and hear what they've been through and Europe told we had a lot of patients that come in here who've been through a ton of heavy metal stuff I had time to get here and nothing happened I have heard the stories of the person's got Mercury out of their mouth and they got better and I've also seen it way more people coming in here with your logical reactions from heavy metals and and and everything in between so so it's its primary tool for some Physicians there's just been a lot of research over along a road I think of at least five or six or eight or nine years please I know like Jesus but he even was already exciting research on the...that it wasn't good for everybody dr. Crosby and who wrote a book on the brain and so so it's when I say it's kind of controversial the people who hang onto it still seemed to cling to it me as a primary factor now there are also collations that you can get online Galatians in the mail and I'm not sure that you know that's a good thing to do without some sort of background information as to what you're getting into maybe even an understanding of what can happen if you have certain abnormalities that a lot of autoimmune patients have like a bad blood-brain barrier bad got very bad lung barrier any way that I can get something to study art study he's going to talk about some of the new studies and so I think that we've seen here we don't see a lot of heavy metal problems here and we do primarily chronic pain we do line disease we do fibromyalgia propriety we do all kinds of...
