In this section from vv. 27-34 we are looking at the topic of Esau despising his birthright.

We learn from this section that "The Believer should not live as a profane person." Why? The Text gives us three actions of the profane person. We examine the first in this episode.

In vv. 27-28 we see 1) The profane person lives a life of worldly freedom that is pleasing to the natural man.

Then, in vv. 29-33 we see 2) The profane person acts on impulse for the gratification of the natural appetites.

And, in v. 34 we learn that 3) The profane person has no regard for the things of God.

In vv. 19-21 we saw that 1) God Sovereignly provides the recipient of the promises.

In vv. 22-23 we learn that 2) God chooses the recipient of the promises by sovereign election.

And in vv. 24-26 we see that 3) he faithful acknowledge the outworking of the sovereign plan.

In vv. 12-18 we encounter another toledoth statement ("these are the generations of...") which tells us what becomes of the person named. In this case, it is Ishmael. As we discover what becomes of him, the sons that he has, and his age upon death, we see two principles in the text:

1) God is faithful to his promises.

2) God works in spite of our sin.

These 11 verses look at "The Death of a Patriarch" - namely, Abraham.

There are two ways to look at this section:

1) The Human Perspective

2) The Divine Perspective

In vv. 1-9 we saw that 1) Believers have the responsibility of ensuring that God’s program continues to the next generation.

Then, in vv. 10-27 we saw that 2) Believers may be confident that the Lord will lead them in their faithful activities.

Now, in vv. 28-60 we note that 3) Believers must give priority to completing God’s Work.

And in vv. 61-67 4) Believers may rest assured that the Lord will complete the good work he has begun.

In vv. 1-9 we saw that 1) Believers have the responsibility of ensuring that God’s program continues to the next generation.

Now, in vv. 10-27 we see that 2) Believers may be confident that the Lord will lead them in their faithful activities.

As we consider the death of Abraham's wife, Sarah we considered 

1) A portrait of a woman of faith in v. 1.

2) Death visits us all in v. 2

3) Life after death in vv. 3-16.

Now, 4) All business, even painful business, can be accomplished in such a way as to glorify God.
