We begin discussing Genesis 5 by looking at the first two verses. We spend the episode making connections to Genesis 4 and drawing the implications from that, as well as talking about the natural divisions in the book of Genesis with the "generations" statements and how Moses approaches this chapter in light of that.

In the first part of v. 17 we saw that 1) The Cultural Mandate is fulfilled.

Then, in 17b, we note 2) The Continual Hardening of the Heart

In vv. 18-24 we see 3) The Growth of Culture.

Finally, in vv. 25-26 we see 4) Seth's Family and the Knowledge of the Lord.

We look at the change in focus by Moses from Cain to Seth and start to follow Seth's line, making some observations about Eve, as well as Seth's name, and examining the phrase "People began to call upon the name of the LORD" and what that means and how significant it is.

In the first part of v. 17 we saw that 1) The Cultural Mandate is fulfilled.

Then, in 17b, we note we note 2) The Continual Hardening of the Heart

And, in vv. 18-24 we see 3) The Growth of Culture, noting that this is secular culture, and how it develops apart from God, contrasting the 7th from Adam down Cain's line vs. the 7th generation from Adam down Seth's line.

Today we introduce this next section with a discussion on the definition and origins of human civilization because we see the birth of it starting here, through the rest of the chapter. But, secular source materials, while correctly defining some aspects of civilization, fail to recognize some key logical points that prove that human civilization, by definition, sets us apart from the rest of the animal world. This all makes sense if we believe what the Bible has to say about man being made in the image of God.

Then, as we move into the first part of v. 17 we note that 1) The Cultural Mandate is fulfilled.

In vv. 3-5 we noted 2) An Acceptable Offering.

In vv. 6-7 we look at 3) The Solution and the Lesson.

In vv. 8-16 we began looking at 4) The Wrong Choice and its Consequences

We looked at the first murder in v. 8

Now we look at the Denial of Sin in v. 9; The Divine judgment in vv. 10-12; The Rebellious Protest in vv. 13-14; and God's Divine Protection in vv. 15-16.

In vv. 3-5 we noted 2) An Acceptable Offering.

In vv. 6-7 we look at 3) The Solution and the Lesson.

Now, in vv. 8-16 we begin looking at 4) The Wrong Choice and its Consequences

Here, we look at the first aspect of this, a) The first murder. Then we look at three aspects of this: i) The Act ii) The implications, and iii) NT Attestation.

In vv. 1-2 we examined 1) The Children born in Sin.

In vv. 3-5 we noted 2) An Acceptable Offering.

Now, in vv. 6-7 we look at 3) The Solution and the Lesson. Here, we note that there was still time for Cain to make right what was wrong, and that serves as a sobering lesson to Christians today, for we all sin and various points. However, if we choose not to address our sin in a timely manner, it can be very dangerous, and we look into the language that is used to describe that.

Today, in vv. 3-5 we note 2) An Acceptable Offering, looking at the opening phrase with regards to time, as well as the two different offerings presented.

Today we spend a few minutes and talk about the ways God has worked at various periods in human history since the fall and try to bring a little clarity to this oft-misunderstood topic. Then, having established that we are now entering the age of conscience and defining what that is, we begin to look at the text.

In vv. 1-2 we examine 1) The Children born in Sin.

We take a step back to look at the bigger picture of sin with regards to human history. We consider

1) What sin is not.

2) What sin is.

3) Some of the outcomes of sin.

4) The Fall and Human history - five observations throughout history that demonstrate the sin's permeation and presence in the human race.
