American interviewers want to hear precise, simple, and clear answers. They don’t want to hear rambling or layered communication. Australians, Canadians, and Germans appreciate this communication style too.

In this episode, we dive into communication styles by nationality, and you’ll learn how to prepare for an interview with a hiring manager who expects concise answers.

If you’re accustomed to talking at length and rambling, modifying your communication style will take some effort. But, it’s possible if you follow the seven tips outlined in the episode.

In this episode, you’ll also hear an example of a concise answer to the interview question, what would you do if you knew your boss was wrong about something?

  • How to Lead Conference Calls

Nowadays, conference calls are the norm. Whether your team members live within a 30-minute radius of one another or live on different continents, you’ll likely conduct all meetings over conference calls.

By now, you know some of the perils of conference calls. Someone forgets to mute themselves, and you hear them breathing or eating their lunch, someone forgets to unmute themselves when they start talking, someone is talking, and then their kid or spouse barges in their office making noise. No matter what unusual situation unfolds during a conference call, someone has to manage the conversation and make it as effective as possible.

In this episode, you will learn how to lead conference calls. We’ll focus on audio conference calls, not video conference calls, which deserve their own episode.

  • Salary Expectations: How to Answer This Interview Question

In telephone screening interviews, it’s common for hiring managers to ask candidates for their salary expectations. Why do they ask this question?

They want to make sure your salary expectations align with the amount they have budgeted for the job. The hiring manager is also testing you to see if you know and will ask for what you’re worth.

While hiring managers have good reasons for asking this question upfront, it's tricky to answer it at the beginning of the job interview process. Consider that a salary is only one component of an overall benefits package.

Yet, if you give a higher range than the company has set, they will eliminate you, and the company will never find out if you would have been worth paying a higher salary. So this question poses a real problem.

You have to convince the employer to ask you this question later in the recruitment process or provide a well-informed range that doesn't get you eliminated from the candidate pool. By the time you are a top candidate, employers will be far more willing to give you the salary you want and deserve.

In this episode, you will learn where to research an appropriate salary range for your role. You’ll also get three strategies for answering the question with sample responses.

By the end of the episode, you will be prepared to talk confidently about your salary expectations.
