Publisher's Summary:
Extraordinary Freedom is an approachable and straightforward invitation to open to life, to inquire within, and to go beyond confusion and live in the light of awareness. Although the book isn't filled with the esoteric language of the Buddhist tradition, it has the depth of this powerful wisdom tradition. By becoming conscious of our inner world, our habits, beliefs, neurosis, and attachments there is an opportunity to see their empty nature and in doing so transform our lives. The wisdom we need is already within us, it is who we are. By living in awareness and gaining insight we discover this for ourselves. In order to reveal this wisdom in our consciousness we need to try on a new way of seeing and relating to life and all the conditions it presents, then the extraordinariness of who we are can reveal itself and the chains that bind us to old hardened views will break. We can experience extraordinary freedom moment by moment, embracing all that life offers. "Many people need a book like this which is simple in its language and profound in its meaning" - Anam Thubten.
Members Reviews:
Simple yet powerful
Marsh has a down-to earth writing/thinking style which --reaching beyond high falutin concepts-- lands you right into the heart of concerns. (If you're willing)
Is your mind busy? Are you being dragged around by your emotional reactions ? Do you shop, eat, drink, whatever to keep from working with what may feel like weirdness in your head? As a mother, a long-term meditator and a teacher (Dana's teaches in public school and is an ordained Buddhist teacher)she draws on her deep experiences (and study) to help the reader make friends with his/herself, to not believe everything we think.
I particularly appreciated chapters 10 ("It's enough!") and 11 ("Living with an Awakened Heart") Though chapter 6, "Tea with my teachers" is very helpful. I'm having a lot of metaphorical tea these days due to my son's illness. Dana encourages the reader to see life's hard knocks as powerful teachings, as friends, that are here to open our hearts. Would you like to learn to be with the world just as it is---brutal and gentle? This book is an important step in that process.
May we fight less and sip more.
well written easy to follow contents
well written easy to follow contents, expressing values and wisdom for people of all ages and backgrounds. Made me understand Buddhism a lot better than some previous books I had read.
Five Stars
This book makes me smile and think and experience my life with more acceptance and pleasure.
A wonderful read!
Extraordinary Freedom is a simply written text for those that wish to bring greater peace to the stresses of everyday life. Rather than battling the intricacies of Buddhist philosophy with contradictions of modern life, Dana Marsh weaves a natural tapestry of anecdotes and metaphors to combine the two. There is something for everyone in this book, and regardless of your background in Buddhism, or religion as a whole, lessons can certainly be taken from its pages. I would hope that the positive feedback she receives from her first novel will encourage a second.
