Today we get to know the president of the Optometric Society of New York, Dr. Thuy Tran.

We cover what it’s like working at an ophthalmology practice in New York and, since she is also the site’s externship program supervisor, she educates us on what to look for when choosing externship rotations.

21,216 lives have been lost in NYC. The future of our city is unknown and while the number of hospitalizations and deaths are decreasing we just aren’t in the clear.

I wanted to learn more about what was happening in the frontlines and who better to learn from than Dr. Kirzner, who is double-board certified in anesthesiology and obesity medicine.

Do you have a PCP? I don’t anymore lol. I called my doctor’s office a few months ago only to find out that they moved!

So right now I’m looking and I remembered that Dr. Caraballo is a PCP whose practice runs on different model called Direct Primary Care, DPC. I wanted to learn more about it so I reached out to her for this episode.

We explore the DPC model, why it’s better for doctors, patients (including those who are unable to obtain insurance) and our healthcare system. Dr. Morán is a Miami-based physician who actually finds herself right now in Ecuador’s port city of Guayaquil, treating COVID-19 patients on the frontlines.

Guayaquil is the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in Latin America. And the crisis is a lot worse than what the reported numbers of cases and deaths show which is what Dr. Morán discusses with us today.

We talk about patient zero, the role of social media during this pandemic and the truth of what’s really happening in Ecuador.

Dr. Moore started optometry school when she was 27 and she shares with us inspirational advice on her unique path towards obtaining her Doctor of Optometry degree.

Two main things we cover are the importance of reaching out to the schools you are interested in and on getting as much shadowing experience as you can.

The time to email or DM doctors with your questions or to set up shadowing opportunities is right now. Right now is when most of us have more time than ever before to check our inboxes and to reply to you.

And even if you are almost done with school, or no longer a student, hearing from women who made it can remind us of our own paths and of how blessed we are to have come as far as we have.
