Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News.
Tai-Ex opening
The Tai-Ex opened up 156-points this morning from yesterday's close, at
23,260 on turnover of 7.5-billion N-T.
The market moved sharply higher on Monday and recouped most of the losses
seen in the previous two sessions after Wall Street rose at the end of last
week.
Monday's point gains were the seventh most for a single day and the sixth
most this year - and also helped the Tai-Ex recover from a 658-point tumble
in the previous two trading sessions last week.
TRC could see NT$12 billion loss in 1st year as company
The Taiwan Railway Corporation says it will likely post losses of 12-billion
N-T this year - its first year as a state-owned corporation after having been
a government agency for decades.
According to the rail operator, the projected loss will exceed (超過) the
estimated loss of over 7.4-billion N-T budgeted last year and the
11.4-billion N-T loss that the former Taiwan Railways Administration posted
for 2023.
The railway corporation says it will also be saddled with an additional
2-billion N-T in expenses that were needed to convert the former government
agency into a commercial company.
However, corporation Chairman Du Wei is remaining upbeat about the company's
future - saying its operating income could turn positive by as early as 2026.
Two acquitted of endangering flights with drone near Taoyuan Airport
The Taoyuan District Court has acquitted two men of endangering flight safety
when they repeatedly flew a drone near Taoyuan International Airport.
They were found to have operated a U-A-V in the vicinity of the airport at
least 10 times between June 24 and July 25 of last year.
Traffic at the airport was disrupted on several occasions - with the most
serious incident leading to a temporary suspension of takeoffs and landings
at around on June 29.
However, the court ruled there was insufficient (不足的) evidence to prove
that their conduct met the requirements for criminal conviction under Article
101 of Taiwan's Civil Aviation Act.
The court ruling can be appealed.
UN Syria Open to Investigating War Crimes
The U.N. organization assisting in investigating the most serious crimes in
Syria says the country’s new authorities were “very receptive” to its
request for cooperation during a just-concluded visit to Damascus — and it
is preparing to deploy (展開行動).
The visit was the first since the organization was established by the U.N.
General Assembly in 2016 to assist in evidence-gathering and prosecution of
individuals responsible for possible war crimes, crimes against humanity and
genocide since Syria’s civil war began in 2011.
UN officials Monday highlighted the urgency of preserving documents and other
evidence before it is lost.

Greece Royal Family Granted Greek Citizenship
Members of Greece’s former royal family have expressed “deep emotion”
after being granted Greek citizenship, ending a decades-old dispute with the
country's government.
Greece abolished the monarchy in a 1974 referendum and the former royal
family was stripped of its citizenship two decades later during a dispute
over the former royal estate that passed to state control.
Now, the ten descendants (子孫,後代) of the late King Constantine II, who
died last year aged 82, formally recognized Greece’s status as a
presidential parliamentary democracy and renouncing any claims to royal
authority or titles.
