In the first chapter of the book of Daniel, we see that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem. Daniel and his young friends are among the Jews who are taken captive to Babylon, which is some 500 miles east of Jerusalem as the crow flies, but closer to 800–1000 miles of travel by the normal trade routes of the day. 
The gross wickedness of the Jews at this time made them weak and unable to defend themselves. Likewise, their lifestyles had separated them from the Lord and His help.

His career has been in insurance, tax advice, and as a manager in the civil service. His Church service includes a mission to England, Sunday School teacher four times, branch/district/stake Sunday School president, bishop’s counselor, elders quorum president twice, branch president (for ten years), stake high councilor, and Church history specialist for the island of Ireland. He survived two major surgeries and loves to share his faith in Jesus Christ. He and his wife, Veronica, are the grateful parents of one son.

Casey Paul Griffiths is an assistant professor of Church history and doctrine at Brigham Young University. He has published numerous books and articles on Church history, most recently What You Don’t Know About the 100 Most Important Events in Church History, with Mary Jane Woodger and Susan Easton Black. He is a member of the Mormon History Association, serves on the board of the John Whitmer Historical Association, and is currently serving as president of the BYU Latter-day Saint Educator’s Society. He lives in Saratoga Springs with his wife, Elizabeth, and four children.
