Today I made a fabric pencil case with a timeless children's design and bright colors. For the interior, I chose a blue fabric that contrasts perfectly, and to further highlight the design, I used a thick blue zipper that harmonizes with the entire project. Although the materials were simple, each one is of very good quality, and that makes a big difference in the final result.

There are many ways and techniques for making a pencil case; this time, I decided on a method that is ideal for fabric, much more practical and easier to work with than other materials I usually use in my projects. Hoy realicé una cartuchera de tela con un diseño infantil que no pasa de moda y colores llamativos. En el interior, escogí una tela azul que contrasta a la perfección, y resaltando aún más el diseño para cerrar usé un cierre grueso azul que armoniza con todo el proyecto. Aunque los materiales fueron sencillos, cada uno es de muy buena calidad, y eso marca una gran diferencia en el resultado final.

Existen muchas formas y técnicas para hacer una cartuchera; en esta ocasión, me decidí por un método ideal para telas, mucho más práctico y fácil de manipular que otros materiales que suelo usar en mis proyectos.       • The printed fabric will be the outer part of the pencil case, and will be a piece measuring 24 cm by 29 cm.

      The plain fabric will be the inside and consists of two pieces measuring 29 cm by 12.5 cm, although it could be another piece the same as the outer piece, which would change the process very little. In fact, we would only save ourselves that central seam to join the two inner pieces, but I worked with the two pieces separately.

      Now, I will explain the step-by-step process in detail:

      La tela estampada será la parte externa de la cartuchera, y será un pieza de 24cms por 29cms

      La tela unicolor será la parte interna y son dos piezas de 29cms por 12,5cms aunque pudiera ser otra pieza igual a la pieza exterior, y cambiaría muy poco el proceso, de hecho solo nos ahorraríamos esa costura central para unir las dos piezas internas, pero yo trabajé con las dos piezas separadas.

      Ahora si, el paso a paso lo explicaré de forma puntual:

      • Closure with printed fabric on the shorter side
      • Pin in place to ensure nothing moves, and sew a straight stitch
      • On the back of the closure, sew one of the plain fabric pieces that forms part of the interior
      • Fold both fabric pieces under to leave the closure exposed, and sew a straight stitch to join the two fabrics together.

        • Derecho de cierre con derecho de tela estampada por el lado más corto
        • Fijo con alfileres para garantizar que no se mueva nada, y paso costura recta
        • Por el reverso del cierre, coso un de las piezas de tela unicolor que forma parte del interior
        • Bajo ambas piezas de tela para dejar descubierto el cierre, y paso costura recta para repisar las dos telas juntas.

          • At the other end of the zipper, I repeat the process, attaching a piece of blue fabric to the back of the zipper.
          • On the right side of the zipper, I can easily place the other end of the patterned fabric on top and sew it on.
          • I check both pieces, and to do this comfortably, I can remove the zipper slider.

            • En el otro extremo del cierre repito el proceso, en el reverso del cierre una pieza de tela azul.
            • En el derecho del cierre el otro extremo de la tela estampada, puedo colocar el extremo encima y coser fácilmente.
            • Repiso ambas piezas, para esto puedo sacar el deslizador del cierre, para hacerlo con comodidad.

              • Join the two inner pieces. If you have worked with a single inner piece that is the same size as the outer piece, this step is not necessary.

              • Insert the slider into the clasp.

              • Turn the piece over and leave it like this to continue working.

                • Uno las dos piezas internas. En caso que hayas trabajado con una sola pieza interna con la misma medida de la pieza externa, este paso no se realiza.

                • Introduzco el deslizador en el cierre.

                • Volteo la pieza y la dejo así para seguir trabajando.

                  • Cut two pieces of the same patterned fabric to make the handles, each measuring 6 cm by 4 cm.
                  • Fold the long edges so that they meet in the center.
                  • Fold again and sew a straight stitch.

                    • Corto dos piezas de la misma tela estampada para realizar las asas, son dos piezas de 6cms por 4cms.
                    • Doblo los bordes largos para que se encuentren en el centro.
                    • Vuelvo a doblar y paso costura recta.

                      • Insert the folded handles, one at each end of the fastener, and secure with pins.
                      • Sew a straight seam at both ends of the pencil case.
                      • Turn the piece right side out through the fastener.

                        • Introduzco las asas dobladas, una en cada extremo del cierre, y fijo con alfileres.
                        • Paso costura recta en ambos extremos de la cartuchera.
                        • Volteo la pieza al derecho, por el cierre.

                          • With the piece completely straight, I mark 2 cm by 2 cm on all corners. To make this easier, I made a square with those measurements on paper and used it as a template, drawing that shape on all corners on both sides of the pencil case on the outer fabric.
                          • I open one corner and, having marked the template on both sides of the outer fabric, I form a straight line in that corner and sew a straight seam.
                          • I repeat this on all corners.

                            • Con la pieza completamente derecha, marco en todas las esquinas 2cms por 2cms. Para facilitar esto, realicé un cuadrado con esa medida en un papel y lo utilicé como plantilla, dibujé esa forma en todas las esquinas por ambos lados de la cartuchera en la tela externa.
                            • Abro una esquina y al haber marcado la plantilla en ambos lados de la tela externa, se me forma un línea recta en esa esquina, paso costura recta.
                            • Repito esto en todas las esquinas.

                              • This is how the seams look at the corners.
                              • I cut off the excess or peak at the corners.
                              • I turn the pencil case over again and sew along the edge of the corners that I had previously sewn and cut.

                                • This process creates a FRENCH SEAM in the corners, the same type used in clothing manufacture. This means that no seam cover is necessary, and the inside is very clean and neat.

                                • Así lucen las costuras de las esquinas.
                                • Corto el excedente o pico de las esquinas.*
                                • Nuevamente volteo la cartuchera y coso en el borde de las esquinas que había cosido y cortado anteriormente.

                                  • Con este proceso se estaría realizando una COSTURA FRANCESA en las esquinas, esa misma que se usa en la confección de ropa, con esto no se hace necesario colocar tapa costura y queda muy limpio y prolijo todo por dentro.

                                  There you go, this design is very easy to make. The process is so quick that it's really enjoyable to see the pencil case finished and ready to use in just a few steps.

                                  As you can see, it looks great and the shape of this design provides plenty of storage space with easy access to everything. Placing the handles on both ends of the closure is a real plus, as it makes it much easier to open and close the pencil case. You might think it's unnecessary, but when you use it, you realize how useful they are, so always make sure to include them.

                                  Listo, este diseño es muy fácil de hacer, el proceso es tan rápido que realmente se disfruta mucho ver en pocos pasos ya la cartuchera confeccionada y lista para usar.

                                  Como pueden ver queda con mucha integridad y la forma de este diseño da un buen espacio de almacenamiento con fácil acceso a todo. Colocar las asas en ambos extremos del cierre es todo un plus, ya que facilita mucho abrir o cerrar la cartuchera, uno puede creer que no hace falta, pero cuando la utilizamos nos damos cuenta que son demasiado útiles, así que nunca dejes de colocarla.

                                  The inner fabric, with its striking color that matches the outer design and closure, is a detail that really elevates the pencil case; and as I said before, the quality of the materials has a direct impact on the final product.

                                  La tela interna con un color tan llamativo y que combina con el diseño externo y el cierre, es un detalle que le aporta mucho nivel a la cartuchera; y como les dije anteriormente, la calidad de los materiales inciden directamente en el producto final.

                                  This design can be modified in all its measurements if you want it to be bigger, taller, or longer. Just think about the measurements a little, and the procedure will always be the same.                                   Este diseño puede ser modificado en todas sus medidas en caso que se desee más grande, alto, largo, solo hay que pensar un poco en las medidas y el procedimiento será el mismo siempre.
