Métis/Algonquin filmmaker Michelle Latimer’s urgent documentary Inconvenient Indian dives deep into the brilliant mind of Thomas King, Indigenous intellectual, master storyteller, and author of the bestselling book The Inconvenient Indian, to shatter the misconception that history is anything more than stories we tell about the past.

Latimer unpacks hundreds of years of history from a distinctly Indigenous point of view, creatively framing Thomas King’s critical journey back through the colonial narratives of North America with Coyote as our cabdriver. “Stories are all we are,” King tells us as he eloquently exposes the falsehoods of white supremacy and deftly punctures myths of Indigenous erasure to lay bare what has been extracted from the land, culture and peoples of Turtle Island.

About Michelle:

Michelle Latimer is an award-winning filmmaker, producer, writer and activist. She is currently showrunning and directing the scripted series Trickster (Sienna Films/Streel Films/CBC), and has just completed production on the feature doc Inconvenient Indian (90th Parallel Productions/National Film Board of Canada/Crave), an adaptation of Thomas King’s book.

In 2016, Michelle chronicled the Standing Rock occupation protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, as part of the eight-part Indigenous resistance series RISE (Viceland), for which she was also the showrunner and director. RISE was awarded the Canadian Screen Award for Best Documentary Program in 2018. Her short film Nuuca (Field of Vision) premiered at TIFF 2017 and screened at the 2018 Sundance and Berlin film festivals. In 2020, Michelle was named the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Sundance Institute Screenwriting Labs and was awarded the Chicken & Egg Breakthrough Award, a prize given to five international filmmakers for their work in social-justice filmmaking.

She was also a 2018 Field of Vision Fellow, under the mentorship of acclaimed filmmaker Laura Poitras. Michelle’s mixed heritage informs her filmmaking perspective, and much of her work is dedicated to the pursuit of Indigenous rights and sovereignty. Michelle is of Algonquin, Metis and French heritage from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg (Maniwaki) QC.

She grew in Thunder Bay, Ontario and currently splits her time between there and Toronto, Canada.

Jennifer is a mother of three and lives in Vancouver.

Joel Bakan is professor of law at the University of British Columbia, and an internationally renowned legal scholar and commentator. A former Rhodes Scholar and law clerk to Chief Justice Brian Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada, Bakan has law degrees from Oxford, Dalhousie, and Harvard. His critically acclaimed book, The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, electrified readers around the world (it was published in over 20 languages), and became a bestseller in several countries. Bakan wrote and co-created (with Mark Achbar) a feature documentary film, The Corporation, based on the book’s ideas and directed by Achbar and Jennifer Abbott. The film won numerous awards, including best foreign documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, and was a critical and box office success.

The New Corporation, a sequel to that film, is based on Bakan’s book of the same name and directed by Bakan and Jennifer Abbott. Bakan’s scholarly work includes Just Words: Constitutional Rights and Social Wrongs, as well as textbooks, edited collections, and numerous articles in leading legal and social science journals. His award-winning book, Childhood Under Siege: How Big Business Targets Children has been translated into several languages.

A recipient of awards for both writing and teaching, Bakan has worked on landmark legal cases and government policy, and serves regularly as a public speaker and media commentator.

Also a professional jazz guitarist, Bakan lives in Vancouver, Canada with his wife Rebecca Jenkins.

Parents will go to great lengths to protect their kids and that’s exactly what happens to a father and son in the new film Hammer. It’s the story of a young man that is put in a terrible position after a deal goes sideways – a deal between him, a young woman, and a local criminal. O’Brien is one of the more underrated actors working today, with great performances in the TV series Halt & Catch Fire, as well as films such as Marriage Story and Ready or Not.

Christian Sparkes wrote and directed Hammer. The filmmaker previously directed the 2014 film, Cast No Shadow.

Christian Sparkes is an award winning writer and director of film and television hailing from Newfoundland, Canada. His films have screened at various festivals around the world including TIFF, Fantastic Fest and Cannes and are typically revered for their unique blend of fantasy and drama along with a classical shooting style.

Christian recently won the Best Atlantic Director prize for his debut feature Cast No Shadow. The film was also nominated for four Canadian Screen Awards including Best Picture. Sparkes is a recent alumnus of the Canadian Film Centre's Director's Lab in Toronto.

About the Director:

Agnieszka Holland was born into an intellectual family in Warsaw, Poland. She graduated from FAMU, the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in 1971. She returned to Poland and began her film career working with Krzysztof Zanussi as an assistant director, and joined the group of promising young Polish directors, the filmmakers of moral unrest, associated with her mentor, the acclaimed Polish filmmaker, Andrzej Wajda.

Earlier in her career, she also directed in the theatre, sometimes with her husband, Laco Adamik. Her TV film debut was “An Evening at Abdon's"(1975) and her first feature film was Provincial Actors, one of the flagship pictures of the cinema of moral disquiet and the winner of the International Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1980.

Her films often continued to have political and/or Polish themes and earned a great deal of critical acclaim. Holland received an Academy Award nomination for best foreign language film for Angry Harvest. Subsequently she directed To Kill a Priest

and Europa Europa, for which she won a Golden Globe and received her second Academy Award nomination for best screenplay.

Agnieszka has also worked extensively in television. Holland directed Red Wind as part of the Fallen Angels limited series and several years later, she directed Shot in the Heart for HBO. She also directed numerous episodes of the lauded series, The Wire, created by David Simon, also for HBO. Her credits also include several acclaimed episodes of the AMC series, The Killing, as well as episodes of Cold Case.

Holland’s body of work often reflects her Jewish and Catholic roots, dealing with issues of faith and mysticism. She often portrays people looking for a way out, striving for self-fulfillment, pursuing happiness and failing or being forced to settle for a dubious compromise and her work poses the question of how human beings morally deal with critical situations.

2040 is a hybrid feature documentary that looks to the future, but is vitally important now. The 2040 journey began with award-winning director Damon Gameau (That Sugar Film). Motivated by concerns about the planet his 4-year-old daughter would inherit, Damon embarked on a global journey to meet innovators and change makers in the areas of economics, technology, civil society, agriculture, education and sustainability. Drawing on their expertise, he sought to identify the best solutions, available to us now, that would help improve the health of our planet and the societies that operate within it. From marine permaculture to decentralised renewable energy projects, he discovered that people all over the world are taking matters into their own hands.

This journey is the central premise for the documentary ‘2040’, a story of hope that looks at the very real possibility that humanity could reverse global warming and improve the lives of every living thing in the process.

It is a positive vision of what ‘could be’, instead of the dystopian future we are so often presented.

About the Director:

Gameau graduated from Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art with a degree in Performing Arts in 1999. In 2011, he won the short film competition, Tropfest with his animation Animal Beatbox.

In 2014, he announced the production of the documentary That Sugar Film, in which he relates the dire mood swings and weight gain he experienced after taking on the low-fat, high-sugar diet for 60 days. Gameau wrote a companion book for the film, That Sugar Book, which reached the top of the Health & Well-being best-seller lists in Australia. That Sugar Film is the highest grossing Australian documentary released in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand.

His most recent film, 2040, is a documentary is a letter to his 4-year-old daughter showing her what the world could look like in 2040 if we put into action the best solutions to many of our environmental challenges. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and has recently become one of the highest grossing Australian documentaries of all time in Australia. He also wrote an accompanying book, 2040: handbook for the regeneration'.

He appeared in the 2009 feature film Balibo, in which he plays the part of Seven Network reporter Greg Shackleton.  He starred as Scotsman Andy Maher in the Australian TV miniseries Underbelly. Gameau starred as Sonny in the Australian movie Thunderstruck, a tale of a group of friends and their devotion to AC/DC and in particular Bon Scott. And has also appeared in many other meaningful projects

Gameau is in a relationship with  actress, Zoe Tuckwell-Smith and together they have one child, daughter, Velvet Gameau.

About Joe:

With more than 100 film, television and stage credits to his name, Joseph Peter Pantoliano is a prolific American character actor who has played many diverse and memorable roles, from Guido in Risky Business to Eddie Moscone in Midnight Run, Cosmo Renfro in The Fugitive, Cypher in The Matrix and Teddy in Memento.

Pantoliano was born September 12, 1951 in Hoboken, New Jersey, the son of Mary (Centrella) and Dominic Pantoliano, first-generation Italian Americans who split when Joe was twelve years old (though they never officially divorced). His mother was a seamstress and bookie, and his father was a hearse driver and foreman at a factory. Despite suffering from severe dyslexia that made studies difficult for him, Pantoliano displayed acting talent from an early age and moved to Manhattan after high school to pursue an acting career.

After four years in Manhattan that included auditions, acting classes, waiting tables and a role as Billy Bibbit in the touring production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Joe Pantoliano moved to California to pursue television and film acting. Joe was successful in landing a number of television roles before getting his feature film debut in The Idolmaker, but his true Hollywood breakthrough came with his turn opposite a 21-year-old Tom Cruise as ruthless pimp Guido in 1983's Risky Business.

A wide array of TV and film roles followed that have led Joe to work with many of Hollywood's brightest talents, both on-screen and off, including Richard Donner, Steven Spielberg, Lilly & Lana Wachowski, Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones, Wesley Snipes, Christopher Nolan and many others.

Winner of a primetime Emmy for his work on The Sopranos, for which he also received two SAG Award nominations, Joe Pantoliano is married to former model Nancy Sheppard, with whom he has two daughters, Daniella and Isabella.

Synopsis:

Dylan, a Gwich'in soldier from the Canadian Arctic, is caught in an ambush in Kandahar, Afghanistan. His capture and interrogation by a Taliban Commander releases a cache of memories connected to the love and death of his Inuit cousin, Asana, and binds him closer to a Pashtun family as they escape across treacherous landscapes and through a blizzard that becomes their key to survival.

The Far North meets the Middle East in a journey of loss and rebirth that lays bare the land, blood ties, and two ancient cultures that collide to re-imagine a future born of 10,000 words for snow.

Marie Clements has ignited her brand of artistry within a variety of mediums including film, TV, radio, and live performance. Her latest project, the feature drama Red Snow has won Most Popular Canadian Feature Film at the Vancouver International Film Festival, Best Canadian Feature Film at the Edmonton International Film Festival; earned nominations for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Film, and won the Best Director of a Feature at the 2019 American Indian Film Festival (AIFF) in San Francisco and Best Achievement in Film from the L.A. Skins Festival in Los Angeles.

Red Snow has recently been nominated for 10 Leo Awards and her feature music documentary, The Road Forward, produced by the NFB premiered at Hot Docs, opened the 2017 DOXA Documentary Film Festival, closed the 2018 ImagineNATIVE Film Festival, receiving five Leo Awards including Best Production, Best Director, and Best Screenwriter. The Road Forward has screened at over 300 venues in North America also receiving a Best Director Award at the AIFF, as well as, a Writer’s Guild Nomination for Best Documentary Screenplay in 2018,. A 2019 Telefilm Canada Birks Diamond Tribute to Women In Film recipient, Marie was also nominated for a DGC Best Director Award for her work on Red Snow. She received the WFF Women on Top Award and WIFTTV Spotlight Impact Award 2018.

Her documentary Looking at Edward Curtis premiered at DOXA and The Yorkton Film Festival with four nominations for Best Documentary and premiered on Knowledge Network last summer 2018. Her multi-award-winning films have screened at Cannes, TIFF, MOMA, VIFF, Whistler Film Festival, American Indian Film Festival and ImagineNATIVE Film Festival.

Her play The Unnatural and Accidental Women opened the first national Indigenous theatre at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa this fall, and her opera Missing toured nationally both to critical acclaim. Marie’s fifteen plays have been presented on some of the most prestigious stages for Canadian and international work garnering numerous awards and publications including the 2004 Canada- Japan Literary Award, and two prestigious Governor General’s Literary Award nominations.

Mozhdah Jamazadah is the first Afghan woman to brave death threats in order to host her own talk show and cover sensitive subjects impacting Afghan women and children.

She plays Khartira the educated daughter of Dylan’s Afghan translator Aman. Mozhdah never calls herself the Oprah of Afghanistan. That’s just the name her adoring fans—which includes individuals like Barack and Michelle Obama as well as Ms. Winfrey herself—have given her. That’s because, like Oprah, this Kabul-born, Vancouver-based icon has sparked conversations and inspired women all over the world as a bold, big-hearted example of female leadership.

Through her internationally renowned music career and ground-breaking television show The Mozhdah Show, Mozhdah has inspired profound respect and serious controversy in equal measure. She’s the first Afghan artist to produce hit records in English, capturing a global audience and performing on international stages. She’s the first Afghan woman to brave death threats in order to host her own talk show and cover sensitive subjects impacting Afghan women and children.

She’s also the first Afghan to perform in the White House, to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show, or to express her mission of empowerment on CNN, Time, and other major news outlets. Mozhdah appeared on ET Canada as a guest co-host and was a panelist on CBC’s Canada Reads 2018 with Jeanne Becker and other prominent Canadian celebrities. Having just recently stepped into the acting industry, she has already booked a number of TV shows and commercials. In this her first leading role in a feature film, Mozhdah plays Khatira the spirited daughter of translator Aman.
