The sudden surge in (shockingly) realistic deepfake videos has been both entertaining and alarming. While it’s fun to see what Will Smith would have looked like as Neo from The Matrix, the potential for deepfake tech to cause harm and spread disinformation is worrying. Facebook, of all companies, has launched a Deepfake Challenge alongside Microsoft in an attempt to study and counter the effects of the tech.
