Our guest discusses coping strategies to bring hope, healing, and strength even in disaster. Dr. Laurie Nadel is a specialist in acute stress, trauma, and anxiety issues and author of The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing, and Strength When Disaster Strikes.

Her first career, as a journalist, led her to spend twenty years writing and producing hard news, meaning those grisly clips of people whose lives were going along normally until a sudden, violent event ripped the ground out from under them. Though her work required detachment and focus, she often wondered what happened to those people after the cameras left.

In 1987, while covering the Iran-Contra hearings for CBS News she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome due to CMV (cytomegalovirus). However, at that time conventional medical treatment for the virus did not exist. This opened the doorway for Laurie to begin studying meditation and seeking natural alternatives to regain health.

At that time she changed career direction and completed two doctorates through independent study: a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and a second doctorate in clinical hypnotherapy. Later, she completed post-doctoral diplomas in clinical training in mind-body medicine as well as clinical homeopathy. Part of each year was spent traveling and studying with indigenous healers.

In 1991 Dr. Laurie Nadel opened her private practice, focusing on stress and health issues, especially burnout; anxiety/phobias; and trauma issues. In April of 2018, she published The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing and Strength When Disaster Strikes. Although the “help cycle” after a disaster lasts about three months, it takes three to five years to recover emotionally.  The five gifts that we need for the long haul are humility, patience, empathy, forgiveness, and growth.

Dr. Soombal Zahid believes in a team approach to managing cancer pain. Through her patient experiences, she has seen that proper pain management has the power to decrease patient suffering and increase the quality of life. Her ultimate goal is to help people realize that the fight against cancer-related pain is a team approach: physicians, counselors, therapists, trainers, families, and of course patients themselves should all take advantage of the therapeutic options available and work together to create an ideal pain management plan for affected individuals.

Dr. Soombal Zahid is a resident physician in Internal Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. She completed her medical training at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and her undergraduate education at Barnard College of Columbia University. Dr. Rosenquist specializes in pain medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. Since the late 1990’s there has been an explosion in the prescribing of opiate pain medication. As a result of advocacy programs such as treating pain as the “Fifth Vital Sign” and aggressive marketing by the pharmaceutical industry, the number of prescriptions has tripled from 76 million in 1991 to 219 million in 2011 (Vector One National). Listen as Chris Johnson, MD, walks you through his journey and experience with the opiate epidemic in the United States. Dr. Johnson works with the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement on their Pain Management Work Group, which develops evidence-based guidelines for treating pain applicable to all specialties. He is also a member of the Minnesota Medical Association’s Board of Trustees.

Chris Johnson received his medical training at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA, graduating in 2000 and completed his residency training in Emergency Medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center in 2003. He has been practicing in the Twin Cities for the last 13 years and is currently part of the Allina Health Care system. He has been involved in fighting the prescription opiate epidemic for over a decade and currently serves as Chairperson for the Dept. of Human Services Opioid Prescribing workgroup. In addition, he is a Board Member of the national organization Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing and is a Board Member of the local advocacy group – the Steve Rummler Hope Foundation, whose mission is to raise awareness of the problem of chronic pain and opiate addiction. Amy is passionate about helping people learn how to live joy-filled, peaceful, and resilient lives.
