This month we are pleased to have Chilwin Cheng return as guest host, where he interviews Lisa Fong, QC. In this episode, Chilwin and Lisa discuss her upbringing with immigrant parents, Asian representation in the legal profession, the lack of judicial diversity on the Bench, her appointment as Queen’s Counsel, and the contested topic of whether potstickers or steamed soup dumplings are better. Queen’s Counsel is an honorary title to recognize a lawyer’s exceptional merit and contribution to the legal profession.
Some statistics on judicial appointments:
In the Federal judicial appointment process for 2019 to 2020, out of 397 applications received, only 34 identified as a visible minority. Ultimately, 60 were appointed and 10 were a visible minority.
BC Provincial Court’s most recent report released in 2017 indicated only 10 out of 63 applicants identified, on an optional basis, as an ethnic or visible minority.
As of January 2021, no BC Court of Appeal judges are Black, Indigenous, or a person of colour.
