Was one civilization copying the other when a step pyramid design appeared in Mesopotamia and Egypt at almost the same time? The Ziggurat of Ur still stands in Iraq, and Genesis names it as the city Abraham left when God called him. This episode explores what biblical archaeology can tell us about the ziggurat, the first pharaohs of ancient Egypt, and how both fit into Bible history.
Dr John Ashton, co-author of Unwrapping the Pharaohs, joins host Kaysie Vokurka to discuss how the Ziggurat of Ur connects to the Bible. Most treatments of the ziggurat present it as just another Mesopotamian ruin, and the conversation challenges the idea that Egypt’s early history can be pushed back by radiometric dating. Dr Ashton points to the Pyramid of Djoser, the Bible’s account of Noah’s descendants and Egypt’s first pharaoh, Menes, and the Bamboo Annals, a Chinese chronology. He concludes that the Bible’s timeline of the Flood, Babel and the scattering of nations fits the history of Mesopotamia and Egypt remarkably well.
In this episode, you will hear:
- How Egypt’s step pyramid builder, Djoser, would have been a contemporary of Terah, Abraham’s father
- Why the Egyptian name for Egypt, “Misra”, may trace back to Mizraim, a son of Ham, and how Menes might line up with him
- How a deliberate slight curve in the Pyramid of Djoser, a technique called entasis, makes straight lines look straighter, and why it reappears 1,500 years later in the Parthenon in Greece
- How the Bamboo Annals dates China’s founding to about 2000 BC, and why Dr Ashton says carbon-14 dates can’t be confirmed without a historical date
