Should we take risks in life? Or should we do everything we can to avoid risks at all costs? Our world, our country, all the way down to our families are grappling with this question on how to live. At this time it is in the midst of a pandemic disease known as Covid-19. But truth be told, this is an age old question that has been grappled with by philosophers, kings, and rulers throughout time. Solomon is said to be the wisest man that ever lived and he too grappled with these questions. Pastor Caleb Phelps recently completed a sermon series on the book of Ecclesiastes. He describes Solomon’s view of risk like this. “How are we supposed to live? Should we just play it safe and be as protected as possible? Should we go for the gusto? How are we supposed to live? And Solomon says, "Cast your bread upon the waters." Our problem is we don't cling to God's wisdom or live for God's purposes. We play it safe. We just do. So what Solomon is saying is life is risky, the world is uncertain, but don't let the uncertainty of life cause you to become reclusive. Be willing to take a risk. Get out there and do something.” Risk vs. Safety. Foolishness vs. Wisdom. Faith vs. Fear. All things that are covered by Solomon in his final written words, Ecclesiastes. Welcome to Echoes of Faith, a podcast about God working in our lives today and how His word impacts our future. This month I am once again sitting with Caleb as he reflects on Ecclesiastes. In many ways, Caleb, we’re trying to jump into the middle of a conversation here. If you as listeners want the continuity of a single conversation, go back to Echoes of Faith Podcast Episode 15 and listen again.
