We usually think of the word “mortify” to mean “scare”, often as “unto death”. The Bible, however, often has that word to mean “kill” or “destroy”. Roman 8:13 talks about putting to death (to mortify) the works of the flesh. This passage is not one of salvation; indeed, it is meant for believers who have already passed that point in life. It is a message of sanctification – being set apart for God’s use – that all believers work on throughout life. We have to be constantly be watchful over fleshly and worldly desires and put them away. Kill ‘em! That makes you not just believers, but sons and daughters of the Most High!
