Genesis 27:1-40

Enter the season of Epiphany—a season of light. Placed between Christmas and Lent, the Epiphany season emphasizes the ministry of Jesus who IS the light of the world. But Jesus didn’t just do mission work; He encouraged the Church to join Him, expecting His disciples to follow His example and shine bright for the sake of others. Consider the words of Jesus Himself:  “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).

Considering the words of Jesus is exactly what we will be doing for the next 7 weeks. To help us focus our attention, we will be utilizing the Red Letter Challenge 40-day devotion book written by Zach Zehnder. How Christians can represent God and effectively witness to others were foundational questions Zach wrestled with until he came to this realization—“What if we take the words of Jesus and actually put them into practice? If we could actually do this, surely that would change people’s perceptions about those who follow Jesus!” His inspiration came from Jesus of course, from the Sermon on the Mount: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24). So join us as we study the red letters found in your Bible and put them into practice. We pray this Epiphany season will be transformational for both you and the world in which we live!

January 6th marks the traditional celebration of “Epiphany,” when the magi visited the baby Jesus, bringing Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. When the magi were in the presence of the newborn King, they could not help but worship Him in reverent awe after following a guiding light for many, many miles.

The season of Epiphany (between Christmas and Lent) has traditionally been a time to explore how God has revealed His glory to the world. That revelation comes primarily through Jesus, who embodied the fullness of God in human flesh. Now, with Christ living in us through the Holy Spirit, God uses His people—the Church—to reveal His love and grace to the world. May God’s love displayed in the manger at Christmas make its way into our hearts today and be a bright guiding light that helps us to follow the Father’s will wherever it may lead us.
