People pass rattlesnakes down the pew because of twelve verses somebody added.

Every Bible in print today is a copy of a copy of a copy. No original manuscript exists anywhere on earth. So when someone says the Bible is the infallible word of God, Leah and Malaine want to ask the obvious follow-up question: which Bible, and which version?

This episode walks through what actually happened to the text. Twelve verses added to the end of Mark that produced snake-handling churches. A Trinity verse that appears in no early Greek manuscript. A King James translator who ran out of Greek and filled the gap by translating backwards from Latin. What the Council of Nicaea was actually about. And why the doctrine of infallibility traces back to Paul describing a collection of writings that did not yet include the New Testament.

• Modern readers have access to roughly 5,800 Greek manuscripts, plus Codex Sinaiticus found in 1844, Codex Vaticanus, and the Dead Sea Scrolls from 1947. None of it existed for the KJV translators.
• Paul is the source of the infallibility doctrine, and he was describing the Septuagint. The New Testament had not been written when he wrote it.
• Be cautious with study Bible commentary. Most English Bible footnotes trace back to the Scofield Reference Bible, which carried a political agenda.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."

Application: John identifies the Word as a person before anyone bound a page. Scripture points to Him, carries His voice, and gets used by God to speak, and it was never meant to occupy the seat that belongs to Jesus. Holding the text with open hands rather than a clenched fist changes nothing about its power. It simply keeps the object of worship where it belongs.

Historical and Textual References

Codex Sinaiticus. A fourth century Greek manuscript containing the oldest complete New Testament in existence. Found at St. Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai in 1844, long after the King James translators had finished their work. It ends Mark at chapter 16 verse 8.

Codex Vaticanus. A fourth century Greek manuscript held in the Vatican Library and one of the two oldest near-complete Bibles known. It sat inaccessible to outside scholars for centuries. It also ends Mark at verse 8.

Erasmus and the Textus Receptus. Erasmus published a printed Greek New Testament in 1516 using six or seven manuscripts he could physically obtain, most from the twelfth century and none older than the tenth. That edition became the basis of the Textus Receptus, the Greek text behind the King James Version.

Irenaeus. A bishop writing around 180 AD. Scholars use his quotations to date when passages were already circulating, and he quotes from the longer ending of Mark, which places its addition sometime in the second century.

The Dead Sea Scrolls. Manuscripts found in caves near Qumran starting in 1947, containing the oldest known copies of Hebrew scripture. They pushed the available evidence back roughly a thousand years.

The Septuagint. The Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures made a few centuries before Christ. It was the version most New Testament writers quoted, and it is what Paul was describing when he wrote about scripture being God-breathed.

The Scofield Reference Bible. Published in 1909 by C.I. Scofield, the first widely distributed study Bible to print interpretive notes beside the text. Its footnotes shaped most English study Bible commentary that followed.

The Ethiopian canon. The biblical canon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the largest in Christianity at roughly 81 books. It includes Enoch and Jubilees, which other traditions removed.

Scriptures for Further Study

John 1:1, 14. The Word was with God, was God, and became flesh.

Mark 16:8. The women flee the empty tomb, where the oldest manuscripts end the gospel.

Mark 16:17-18. Believers will take up serpents and drink deadly things unharmed.

1 John 5:7-8. The three that bear record in heaven, absent from early Greek manuscripts.

Revelation 22:19. The KJV reads book of life where Greek manuscripts read tree of life.

2 Timothy 3:16. All scripture is God-breathed, written before the New Testament existed as a collection.

John 14:9. Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

2 Timothy 1:7. God gave a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind rather than fear.

Open your Bible this week and read the footnotes you have been skipping. Most modern translations already bracket Mark 16:9-20 and flag 1 John 5:7. The information has been sitting in your own Bible the whole time.

This week on The Fringe Files they work through what came out, why the church name changed when it did, and the question underneath all of it: whether a healing from the wrong kingdom carries a price that comes due later.

Also - court filings unsealed the fact that an AI company has been shredding physical books by the million after scanning them. • Court filings unsealed in Bartz v. Anthropic describe Project Panama, an internal effort to destructively scan books at scale. Spines are cut off, pages are fed through high-speed scanners, and the paper is discarded.
• A defensive, angry reaction to a sincere question is worth examining in yourself. God invites questions and welcomes childlike curiosity, and shutting people down is what drives them out of the body entirely.

Matthew 24:24

"For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect."

Application: Jesus assumed the signs would be real. He never suggested the counterfeits would be obvious or easy to spot, and he said the target would be the elect, meaning people who love him and are genuinely trying to follow. A crowd, a healing, and a manifestation prove nothing about the source. That is precisely why this warning came from Jesus himself, and why his words carry more weight here than any teaching built on top of them.

• Freemasonry in a bloodline can bring charisma down the line, meaning the occult can operate through someone unknowingly and without any personal involvement.
• The modern church elevates charismatic gifting and biblical knowledge above wholeness and healing. A radical salvation can deliver someone from drug dependency while the multi-layered soul issue underneath stays untouched and leaks out elsewhere.
• Say that someone is operating in witchcraft rather than saying they are a witch. Satan means accuser of the brethren, and identity statements create alienation that keeps people from seeking healing.
• The people most qualified to dismantle dark structures are often the ones who were programmed to build them. They earned that spiritual authority through suffering, which makes their healing frontline kingdom work.

Application: Dr. Robin points out that peace and joy are the two highest frequency emotional states available to a human being, and that brain science shows we are wired for both. Paul names them as the substance of the kingdom itself. Pursuing them is more than a mood preference. It is what builds the bandwidth to face hard truth, hold discernment, and stay standing in a world engineered to keep you depleted.

Application: This is the verse Sarah Beth ran everything through while living in a place where spiritual practice was woven into ordinary life. Testing a spirit requires one honest question: where is this leading me? The answer usually arrives quietly, as a check in your spirit that you can honor or talk yourself out of. Most people talk themselves out of it, and that is where the erosion begins.

Application: Paul locates a ruling spirit in the air itself, working through disobedience across whole populations. The Hebrew ruach carries wind and spirit in the same word, and Scripture describes kings blown by every wind. If the Holy Spirit fills the air of every room a believer walks into, the counterfeit operates on the same terrain. This is the verse that reframes mind control as a biblical category rather than a conspiracy theory.

Application: Jesus draws the line at abiding. Fruit comes from staying connected and doing what the vine assigns. Everything produced outside of that connection is dead works, no matter how good it looks or how sincere the motive. Before you take on one more thing for the kingdom, ask Him whether He assigned it. Being strategically positioned where He put you matters more than being busy everywhere He did not.

Application: Jesus gave the body of Christ a fruit test, and it still works. Signs, crowds, and manifestations prove nothing on their own, because Egypt's sorcerers produced signs too. The word "devil" doesn't appear once in the Hebrew Bible. Not once.

What happened between the Old and New Testaments changed everything. When 70 Jewish scholars translated their scriptures into Greek for the Septuagint, they made a choice - "ha-satan" became "ho diabolos." The neutral Hebrew title "the accuser" picked up a moral charge it never carried before. A job description became an identity.

In Part 2B of our Enemy series, we trace how the New Testament writers inherited this Greek translation and what they did with it. We walk through 1 John and John 8 that confirm a personal being with agency, then follow the thread to Revelation 12:9 where four names collapse into one. The Dead Sea Scrolls show us that Second Temple Judaism understood this hierarchy, the divine council, the Watchers, the kingdom of darkness operating with structure and strategy. What the Western church flattened into "the devil made me do it" was once a far more layered and dangerous reality.

This is the origin of evil traced through translation choices that shaped 2,000 years of spiritual warfare theology, and the spiritual deception that followed when the Hebrew context was lost.

People and Texts Referenced

The Septuagint (LXX). The Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible made by about 70 scholars in the third to second centuries BC. The version Jesus and the apostles most often read and quoted, and the text that first rendered ha-satan as ho diabolos.

Ho diabolos. The Greek word behind "devil," meaning slanderer or false accuser, from a verb root meaning to throw across. It carries a moral charge the Hebrew ha-satan did not.

The four Greek terms for the adversary. Diabolos (slanderer), antidikos (legal opponent, 1 Peter 5:8), ho antikeimenos (the one who opposes, 1 Timothy 5:14), and echthros (hostile enemy, Matthew 13).

Ho poneros. The masculine singular "evil one" in 1 John 5:18-19, distinct from the neuter to poneron, which would mean abstract evil.

Jerome and the Latin Vulgate (around 400 AD). Dropped the definite article from "the Satan," which is where Satan hardened into a proper name in the West.

Book of Enoch. Read from on-air, including the passage on wisdom and iniquity as beings, evidence of a fuller divine-council world.

John Milton (next episode). The poet who gave Christians the pitchfork, horns, and hellfire image of Satan, none of which is in the Bible.

Augustine of Hippo (next episode). The bishop who systemized the privation theory of evil, pushed Enoch out of the Western canon, and promoted the Sethite reading of Genesis 6.
