Racism is woven into the fabric of America. More than 150 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed, the first enslaved Africans arrived in America and were subjected to unspeakable trauma and tragedy through forced labor, rape, murder and more. Yet, the perpetuation and growth of slavery, followed by laws designed to ensure Black people remained socially and economically inferior, was enabled by Church leaders who used doctrine to approve of the practices harming Black people.
