And the question will not be whether we were the smartest or the strongest or the most gifted… The question the Lord will consider will be… did we offer up to him our five barley loaves and two small fish in the hope and expectation not that we by our power could make something of it, but in the hope and expectation that he by his power could make something of it?”

Our text sets up contrasting pictures for us. David humbles himself, accepts worldly rejection, and both serves and relies on the house of Yahweh. Saul exalts himself, allies himself with the world, and boldly declares war on the house of Yahweh. In Saul we see something of Adam’s rebellion. And if Saul points to the source of our distress … then David points to the source of our hope.

 

Pastor Nicoletti preaches on “Two Sons, Two Ways, Two Destinations” from 1 Samuel 21-22.

What does it mean to know something? Jesus makes some astounding claims about his identity in John chapter five. He says that he is the Son of God. And then he anticipates the next question his hearers will have: On what basis should they believe these claims about his identity? Jesus tells them that they already possess three pieces of testimony They “know” those three pieces of testimony … but they don’t really know them.

We are called to live in the world but not be of the world. And so Jonathan returns to the house of Saul. His calling is not to give his ultimate loyalty to the kingdom of Saul. But his calling is also not to flee from the kingdom of Saul. His calling is to live in the kingdom of Saul while his ultimate loyalty is to the kingdom of David. And to choose such a life is for Jonathan to choose a life of voluntary obscurity for the sake of the kingdom of God.
