What causes a heart to grow spiritually dark? Romans 1:21 gives us a sobering progression: people knew God, but did not glorify Him or give thanks; their thinking became futile, and their hearts were darkened.

It Is Finished! — The Last Word of Christ

Because this standard of holiness is impossible to reach by our own willpower, it is not a program of self-improvement, but a work of sanctification where we simply say "Yes" to the Architect. Do not be discouraged by stumbles, as God knows our limitations and promises that He will not rest until He has finished the work He began.

• Description: In our darker moments, we often label certain lives—the hardened criminal or the perpetual runaway—as "hopeless," a comfortable judgment that allows us to stop worrying about them. However, this stands in opposition to the character of God, as evidenced by the criminal on the cross who, despite having no time for "good works," received the promise of Paradise through a final act of repentance. Biblical hope originates from God, not human resources, and because grace is greater than sin, no human crime acts as a ceiling for the mercy of the Almighty. While the redeeming power of Christ is an offer rather than a mandate, the only truly "hopeless" case is one that refuses to repent and chooses despair over the hand of the Savior. We are called to abandon the luxury of giving up on people and instead pray for those who have set themselves against the light.
