Today we are going to be talking about our feature film: The Sword in the Stone, the new Aladdin teaser trailer, and then we’re going to get down to business and rank our favorite Disney Christmas movies.

• “Feature Film”

The Sword in the Stone

The Sword in the Stone is a Disney animated film based on the T.H. White novel The Sword in the Stone
It is about the search for a successor to the British throne after the death of King Uther Pendragon. A sword is found embedded in a stone and anvil with an inscription that proclaims that whoever can pull the sword is to be the rightful king. Many try, but no one is able to pull the sword, and with the passage of time, it is forgotten.
In the meantime, the boy Arthur, called “Wart” meets the wizard Merlin and his companion, the highly educated owl Archimedes, and with their guidance, learns the importance of education as well as valuable life lessons about justice through the use of Merlin’s magical shapeshifting powers.

Acting as a squire, Wart finds the sword in the stone while looking for a sword for his brother Kay to use in a tournament, and, without knowing what it is, pulls the sword from the stone. When the identity of the sword is realized and it is discovered that Wart was the one who pulled it, he is made King - wiser and better equipped to rule using the lessons he learned from Merlin

• General opinions on the movie

• Fun Facts:

  • This film has been very confusing for many because it is based on the original 1938 novel The Sword in the Stone. 1958 rerelease as part of compilation.

  • Original voice actor for Wart had to be replaced after he hit puberty during production - replaced with brothers

  • For the voice of Merlin, director Wolfgang Reitherman estimated that seventy actors read for the part, but "none evidenced that note of eccentricity that we were seeking. We wanted Merlin to be eccentric but not hokey." At the same time, Karl Swenson was initially cast for Archimedes, but the filmmakers decided to cast him instead as Merlin.

  • Pocahontas

  • Fun Facts:

1. Richard White was originally going to voice Governor Ratcliffe, but the filmmakers felt the audience would hear White's distinctive voice, and think of him as Gaston from Beauty and the Beast (1991). So, he was replaced with David Ogden Stiers, who also voiced Ratcliffe's manservant Wiggins. Coincidentally, Stiers was also a cast member of Beauty and the Beast (1991), as the voice of Cogsworth the Clock.

2. Animators working on the film regarded it as being one of the hardest films ever produced by the studio. The complex color schemes, angular shapes, and facial expressions meant that the film was in production for five years. The hard work paid off, however. Pocahontas is now frequently cited as being one of the most beautifully, and realistically, animated characters in the Disney canon, her fluid movements mainly being attributed to rotoscoping.

3. First animated Disney film with interracial romance

4. Released on Pocahontas’ 400th birthday.

5. The world premiere was staged at Central Park, New York, on June 10, 1995. With over one hundred thousand people attending, it holds the record for the largest movie premiere.

6. In their quest for authenticity, the Disney studios hired mostly Native American actors and actresses to do the voices. They also employed Native American consultants, and had a session with a real shaman. Despite these efforts, prominent Native American activists issued an open letter condemning the film for its historical inaccuracies, and stereotyping of the Indian people. However, actor and Native American activist Russell Means (who provides the speaking role and physical inspiration of Powhatan) has referred to the film, in particular the opening, as being the "single best representation of American Indians that Hollywood has ever done."

  • Nightmare Before Christmas -

  • Fun Facts:

  • Chris Sarandon “Prince Humperdink” is the speaking voice of Jack while Danny ELfman is the singing voice or Jack and others.

  • In 2001, Walt Disney Pictures began to consider producing a sequel, but rather than using stop motion, Disney wanted to use computer animation. Tim Burton convinced Disney to drop the idea. "I was always very protective of [Nightmare] not to do sequels or things of that kind," Burton explained. "You know, 'Jack visits Thanksgiving world' or other kinds of things just because I felt the movie had a purity to it and the people that like it."

  • Oogie Boogie was originally intended to be Dr. Finklestein in disguise. Reportedly, Tim Burton was so infuriated by this idea that he literally kicked a hole into the wall.

  • It took a group of around 100 people three years to complete this movie. For one second of film, up to 12 stop-motion moves had to be made.

  • Walt Disney's second fully animated film to have a PG rating, the first being The Black Cauldron (1985).

  • Some of the presents Jack delivers to the kids are nods to Tim Burton films. The snake looks like a Sandworm from Beetlejuice (1988),and the shrunken head is from the afterlife waiting room in the same film. The Cat and Duck are both featured in Batman Returns (1992) - the Cat as the mascot for Shreck's department store, the duck resembling a vehicle driven by the Penguin.
