When Jesus said, “I am the light of the world,” my mind first went to a flashlight—something that shows me what I could not see and helps me know which way to go.

But when I sat down and studied His words, I found connections going all the way back to the beginning.

God spoke light into darkness. David said, “The LORD is my light.” Isaiah wrote about a light to the Gentiles. Simeon held Jesus and called Him that Light. Then Jesus said it plainly Himself: “I am the light of the world.”

But Jesus did not stop there. He said the person who followeth Him will not walk in darkness. And that “eth” matters because it points to continuing to follow Him.

We can know His name, quote His words, and even call Him our Shepherd…but are we actually following Him?

This week, what started as a study of The Good Shepherd took us all the way back to Jehovah Rohi, straight through Immanuel, and into a connection I didn’t see coming.

Jesus said His sheep know His voice—and they follow Him.

So what happens when His Word leads us somewhere we don’t want to go? What happens when another voice sounds better? And what does it really mean when Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd”?

Jesus is the Good Shepherd—but His sheep don’t just know who He is. They know His voice, and they follow Him. This week we’re asking the harder question: Who are we really following?

John looked at Jesus and called Him something no one else did: “the Lamb of God.”

I thought I understood why. Jesus died for our sins. But when I started following that name through Scripture, I found a trail that took me from Genesis, to the Passover, to Isaiah, to the cross—and all the way into Revelation.

And what I found changed the way I read John’s words:

Why did Jesus call Himself the Son of man?

At first, the name sounds like it’s simply pointing to His humanity. But when we follow those words through Scripture, they take us all the way back to Daniel—and suddenly the clouds, the kingdom, the authority, and even the reaction of the high priest start making a whole lot more sense.

What could Jesus have possibly said that made people want to stone Him?

But over and over again, one claim seemed to make people the angriest.
