  • What Happens After? A Journey Through Beliefs About the Afterlife

After losing her husband, Laura embarks on a heartfelt exploration of what different cultures and religions teach about life after death. She invites children to imagine heavenly gardens, fields of reeds and endless cycles of rebirth, while reflecting on universal themes of love, kindness and hope. Through stories, movement and a calming meditation, listeners learn that diverse beliefs about the afterlife all emphasise living kindly and staying connected to the ones we love.

    What’s Inside This Episode

In this thoughtful episode, Laura asks: What happens when someone we love dies? She discovers that beliefs about the afterlife vary widely yet share common threads of love and moral action.

    • Ancient Egypt’s Field of Reeds: Egyptians imagined a paradise called the Field of Reeds where the deceased lived eternally by streams and trees, free from sickness or death To enter, souls faced a weighing of the heart ceremony with Osiris, where a heart lighter than the feather of truth meant a blissful afterlife. Kids practice balancing their “heart” and a feather with outstretched arms.
    • Christian visions of Heaven: Christianity teaches that heaven is a place of peace and closeness to God where God “will wipe every tear” and there is no more death, mourning or pain. Laura invites listeners to imagine a joyful reunion with loved ones.
    • Islamic hope in Jannah: Muslims believe that righteous people enter Jannah, an eternal garden filled with rivers of water, milk, wine and honey. Paradise is a place without sorrow or fear, and families are reunited.
    • Hindu cycles of reincarnation: Hindus view life and death as part of samsara, an ongoing cycle of birth, death and rebirth; karma, the law of cause and effect, determines the nature of one’s next life. The ultimate goal is moksha, liberation from this cycle. Laura compares reincarnation to leveling up in a video game.
    • Buddhist path to Nirvana: Buddhism teaches that we are trapped in samsara until we achieve nirvana, “a state of perfect peace beyond birth and death” Children practice blowing out a candle to symbolise the extinguishing of suffering and desire.
    • Judaism and life now: Judaism affirms an afterlife but focuses on living well in the present; there is little dogma about what happens after death. The righteous may be reunited with loved ones, but Jews emphasise mitzvot (good deeds) and tikkun olamn repairing the world.
    • Mindful listening adventure: Laura and the kids play a sound‑guessing game featuring bells, waves, fire, harp music and wind. Each sound connects to a culture’s belief about the afterlife and teaches listeners to pause and focus. Mindfulness meditation helps children manage anxiety, improve attention and choose their responses.
    • Belief Backpack treasures: As always, the episode ends with take‑home values: Kindness counts everywhere, Hope helps our hearts, and Love lasts forever.

    For Parents and Educators

This episode gently introduces difficult topics like death and grief through multicultural stories, simple movements and guided meditation. Here are ways to use it:

    • Open conversations about death: Use the episode as a springboard to talk about your family’s beliefs and feelings. Encourage children to draw a picture of what they imagine happens after life or write a letter to someone they miss.
    • World religions study: Pair each belief segment with further reading or art projects. For example, craft a scale and feather to learn about the Egyptian heart‑weighing ritual or design a lush garden to represent Jannah. Discuss similarities and differences between beliefs.
    • Mindfulness practice: Try the “Listen with Your Heart” challenge: find a quiet spot, breathe slowly and imagine a glowing heart light. Meditation can help children feel calmer and manage emotions.
    • Social‑emotional learning: Reinforce the Belief Backpack treasures by celebrating acts of kindness, encouraging hopeful thinking and recalling memories of loved ones.

By exploring the afterlife through many lenses, this episode teaches kids that beliefs may differ but compassion and love unite us all.

  • Amaterasu and the Sun Salutation

In this week’s adventure, Laura invites Explorers on a journey to Japan to meet Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess. According to ancient chronicles, Amaterasu is revered as the goddess of the sun and the universe. Legends tell how she once hid herself inside the Heavenly Rock Cave after a quarrel, plunging the world into darkness. The gods devised a joyful plan to coax her out by hanging jewels and a mirror on a sacred sakaki tree and dancing with laughter until curiosity drew her from the cave, restoring light to the world.

As we learn this story, Laura guides kids through Sun Salutation, a yoga sequence that awakens the body, builds strength and flexibility, and helps us honor the light within ourselves. Research shows that yoga and mindfulness can improve balance, strength, endurance and aerobic capacity in school‑age children; it can also boost focus, memory and self‑esteem, and reduce anxiety and stress. This movement‑meets‑mythology episode will leave young listeners feeling grounded, grateful and ready to shine.

  • Ubuntu: I Am Because We Are

What makes a community feel like one big family? In this episode of Faithfully Explore! we travel to a lively African village marketplace to discover the meaning of Ubuntu. A beautiful philosophy from the Zulu and Xhosa languages that means “I am because we are.”

Laura guides children and families through stories, games, and imagination exercises that bring Ubuntu to life. Kids will hear how a group of children chose to share fruit instead of racing against each other, learn how communities in Southern Africa make decisions together under the shade of a tree, and discover how leaders like Nelson Mandela practiced Ubuntu through generosity and care for others.

Listeners are invited to join in by stretching their arms wide for an “Ubuntu hug,” breathing deeply as they imagine life in an African village, and drumming, dancing, and moving together as one. Through the Friendship Bridge, Laura connects Ubuntu with values in other faith traditions: Jesus’ teaching to “love your neighbor as yourself” in Christianity, and Buddhism’s compassion for all living beings.

To make these lessons practical, kids play a round of “Ubuntu or Not Ubuntu?” where they spot kindness and selfishness in everyday situations. Then comes the One Week of We Challenge, encouraging children to live Ubuntu by sharing, helping out, and practicing empathy each day. A printable chart at faithfullyexplore.com helps families track their Ubuntu moments and reflect together.

The Belief Backpack segment zips up the treasures of this episode:

    • We are all connected: every kind act ripples through the community.
    • Everyone matters: each person is precious and has something to contribute.
    • Share and care: life is happier when we give generously and include others.

Finally, Laura shares an African folktale from the Democratic Republic of Congo, The Value of a Person. In this playful story, the parts of the body argue about who is most important until they discover that even the smallest, least-respected part has a vital role to play. The lesson? No one is useless. Every member of a community helps the whole body thrive.

With imagination, movement, and heart, this episode helps families understand that our best selves shine when we lift each other up. Together, we end with a promise: “I am, because we are.”
