A man lost $640 million due to a minor error 12 years ago, and he has since done all in his power to regain his lost wealth. This is the tale of James Howells, who had roughly 7,500 Bitcoins stored on a hard drive before it was inadvertently thrown out in the trash. In 2013, the price of bitcoin was quite low; today, it is worth Rs 6,290 crore ($640 million). Howells fought for 12 years to regain his possessions after this error, but a recent court ruling put a stop to all of his dreams. The 12-year search for Bitcoin was then put on hold.

James Howells's experience illustrates the unpleasant reality of Bitcoin. While lost passwords can be restored in a typical banking system, assets in a digital currency such as Bitcoin are permanently lost if the private key is lost. Now that Howells' $742 million treasure is in the trash, it will serve as a reminder of Bitcoin's cruelty as well as its magnificence. We learned from this incident that digital assets cannot be handled carelessly and that every action must be carefully considered.
