Fall 2018 Retreat Session 6 Dukkha - Fie Discourse

Listen Later

This is a recording of the sixth session from our Becoming Buddha Foundations Of Mindfulness and Meditation Spring Retreat at Won Dharma Center on September 22, 2018.
My talk and our Sangha discussion is on the the Fire Discourse and the Mgga-Vibhanga Suttas. The Fire Discourse uses the example of fire-worshippers, a common cult of the time, to teach how the flames of passion arise from ignorance of Four Noble Truths resulting in ongoing confusion, deluded thinking, and suffering. It is the preoccupation with Dukkha that provides the intentional distraction necessary to continue to ignore ignorance. When seen in the context of Dependent Origination and Four Noble Truths it becomes clear that it is the preoccupation with Dukkha that has obscured the Buddha’s Dhamma and allowed for the many contradictions to the authentic Dhamma prevalent in Modern Buddhism.
The Magga-Vibhanga Sutta is the Buddha's thorough analysis of the Eightfold Path leaving no ambiguity as to the singular path he taught, and why.
Videos of our Spring 2018 retreat sessions are available here: https://becoming-buddha.com/becoming-buddha-2018-retreats/

All of these talks are based on the suttas included in my book Becoming Buddha, Becoming Awakened.
