Sounds Southern

Fall Sunrise in the Cypress Swamp

Listen Later

Recorded on October 11, 2024, at Belmont's Clear Springs, this is the sound of an early fall dawn chorus in the cypress swamp. As the rising sun burns off morning fog, the birds create an oasis of sound featuring powerful drumming and the wicka wicka call of the Northern Flicker. Adding to the woodpecker descent are those large to small including Pileated, Red-bellied, Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, Hairy & Downy. Others in the chorus include: Red-shouldered Hawk, Belted Kingfisher, Winter Wren, Ruby-Crowned & Golden-Crowned Kinglet. Sounds Southern Extended listeners will hear the classic hoot (who cooks for you, who cooks for you alll) of the Barred Owl beginning at the 20 minute mark.
