In the sweltering summer of 1968, rookie park ranger Mel Heaton was expecting solitude and scenic beauty at Phantom Ranch, deep in the heart of the Grand Canyon. After the smoke cleared from the 1896 Montpelier Bank robbery, Henry Rhodes “Bub” Meeks stepped off the wanted posters and into a slow-motion train wreck of his own making. Riding with Butch Cassidy may have taught him a few rules—don’t shoot unless you have to, treat women and children right, keep it clean and clever—but Bub’s luck ran dry faster than Selam the prison horse could gallop.

In the sweltering heat of August 13th, 1896, three men rode into the quiet town of Montpelier, Idaho. By sundown, the Bank of Montpelier had been cleaned out, a deputy was chasing shadows on a bicycle, and history had been written by the hooves of outlaws heading east.

This episode follows the little-known story of Henry “Bub” Meeks, the incidental outlaw who found himself riding alongside Butch Cassidy and Elzy Lay. Raised in the hardscrabble ranchlands of Utah, Bub’s journey from hard-working cowboy to accidental bandit is one of loyalty, mischief, and misfortune. As the Wild Bunch robbed trains and banks across the West, Bub’s role often hovered between comedy and tragedy.

Told with rich narration, sound design, and dramatized dialogue, this true tale unpacks the infamous Montpelier bank robbery, the squirrel infestation of 1896, and the strange pursuit that followed — complete with a penny-farthing bicycle.
