Rayden Solicitors' Partner and Mediator Priya Palanivel is joined by Dr Kathy Weston M.Phil. (Cantab) LL.B., one of the UK’s leading experts on parental engagement in children’s lives and learning. Priya and Kathy discuss being resilient in the face of change and how incredibly important it is to maintain the mental and physical wellbeing of everybody in the family, and particularly children whatever age they might be. With the unprecedented times that have evolved since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have become even more aware of the pressures on families and the potential for childhood anxiety to peak during these weeks and months. The change in our lifestyles to more 'virtual living' has been profound and particularly on our children of all ages - they are spending even more time on computers and mobile devices than ever before. Homeschooling has meant many more hours on computers and laptops, staying connected with friends and family means constant access to mobile communication channels. It is vitally important for everyone's mental wellbeing to have these connections, be able to learn and work and have the ability to stay in touch with friends, but for children the increased access to technology and time spent in a virtual world presents more than just a connection to their school work or friends - it allows them to use and experiment with multiple channels of communication, some of which they may not previously have been aware of, and with a perceived 'genuine reason' to do so. As adults we have adjusted to changes in circumstances, we are aware of the perils of cyber security and too much time spent 'on screen', but for children there may be many aspects of the virtual world that are enticing whilst the dangers are misunderstood or, worse still, they are oblivious to the nature of unsafe and influential content. One of the most well documented causes of childhood anxiety is the impact of 'screen time' and social media and the pressure to conform that children can feel when they are increasingly living their lives through their technology.
