What makes a good Film Adaptation?

Since 1939 when gone with the wind was adapted to a motion picture and set all sorts of history Hollywood has been adapting books into films and most recently with the success of movies like Batman Begins and the Avengers they have been bringing comics to the big screen.  Part of the reason is that the stories are already developed and another is that they bring a devoted audience with them which translates into big bucks.  Today we’re going to be talking about what makes a good adaptation, some of our favorites, some of our least favorite and some of our hopes.

What is the Best Adaptation you have ever seen?

Nik – Stardust, Shawshank Redemption, Jurassic Park, James Bond

Amy – The Book Thief, Hunger Games, Harry Potter

Branden – How the Grinch Stole Christmas Batman Begins / The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Wizard of Oz

Lena – To kill a mockingbird, Stranger than Fiction, And then there were none

Jeff – The Prestige,  the walking dead, world war z , the martian, arkham games

Lord of the Rings, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, Coreline, Hobbit, Da Vinci Code, Sherlock

What is the Worst Adaptation you’ve ever seen?

Nowadays everyone has their own opinions on the “best” ways to “read” books, and we tackle the different book formats and discuss the pros and cons in order to determine what the best way to get these stories are.  We cover the Paper vs Digital book war and talk about some of the key differences between those and Audio books with Lena English.  Which is best?  Well you’ll just have to listen to us and make that decision for yourself, but all the experts agree that people that consume novels are more empathetic than those who don’t.

Where the disagreement comes in is which format is better for what topics?  Some studies have shown that it is harder to put plot points in order if you read the book on a kindle rather than the paper version, and we find that sometime its even harder to put together plot points while listening to Audio books, especially while Pole Dancing.

Trailers have been around for as long as movie theaters have been around.  In Fact in 1895 The very first movie theater in existence started showing trailers as a way to bring in some advertising money. Once sound was added to Movies it became extremely enticing to show trailers for Plays and Movies. The First trailer like this was seven minutes long.

In the 1930’s and 40’s it became quite the corporate affair with a company called the National Screen Service which was able to sign contracts to make trailers for most of the major movie studios and their goal was to give away as little as possible but instead showcase the stars, the special effects and whatever else the show had to offer, basically giving it a glimpse of the movie instead of a narrative rundown.  Their format was basically 1 – Some text like, “You’ve Never Seen Anything Like It!” and “Sensational! Marvelous! A Romance for the Ages!” 2- Then they added some narration to clear up some murky complexities of the plot 3- Music to showcase the emotion behind the film and then 4 – a montage of sharp one liners and clips to show the characters

Time went on and we now live in a world of block busters and the trailers give away much more, But should we watch them or avoid them.  That is the question that we’re going to talk about today.
