Fangs & Fur

I sit down with Julie Anne Lee, DCH RCSHom, from Adored Beast Apothecary, to discuss the booming mushroom industry and the ins and outs of their medicinal benefits.

We touch on the complexity of mushrooms and how they are often compartmentalized in the industry. The conversation also delves into the concept of communication in nature and how it relates to fungi.

Dr. Julie shares their experience owning a medicinal mushroom company called Microbiome and their passion for environmental sustainability.

We round out part 1 of this two-part episode by exploring the gut microbiome and the relationship between mushrooms and bacteria.

This is a fascinating conversation on the power of mushrooms.

Girls Gone Raw

Lauren Back from Girls Gone Raw is back in the studio. She knows her stuff when it comes to taking care of older dogs and cats.

Aging is a normal part of life, and at some point all dogs become seniors. The important thing to know is that senior dogs have different care requirements than young ones.

As a dog ages, they become less mobile, their hearing and sight aren't as good as they used to be, and they are more prone to various diseases. Still, getting older isn't a death sentence and dogs can spend their golden years healthy and happy.

Girls Gone Raw

We get to speak with "The Father of Raw Food." I am joined by Lauren Becks from Girls Gone Raw for this interview.

For over 50 years, Ian has practiced veterinary medicine and espoused one consistent message; feed your dog a raw, evolutionarily appropriate diet.

He's a best selling author in the areas of raw pet food, whole food nutrition, not only for companion animals, but also for humans. Add to that he is a recognized expert in nutritionist, animal acupuncture, and agricultural science.

When you Google Ian's name, you see he is considered the "father of raw feeding" and the is the one that pioneered the acronym "BARF" for biologically appropriate raw food (or "bones and raw feeding").

Dr. Ian Billinghurst began his companion animal veterinary practice in 1975. In the mid 1980’s, following years of clinical research, he noticed the devastating effect that commercial foods had on dog and cat health and was amazed at the profound healing power of raw feeding.

Enjoy the episode!

Plus, we get to speak with Dr. Billinghurst a bit after the "official recording." Here's what we got to ask him.

Flea and tick preventatives are a common staple in many pet owners' homes, but are they really as safe as we think? According to the EPA, the regulatory body that monitors these drugs, conventional flea and tick preventatives can have serious adverse side effects on dogs, including vomiting, seizures, and liver failure. In 2008 alone, there were over 44,000 reports of serious adverse side effects and 600 deaths linked to these products.

But it's not just our dogs that are at risk. These insecticides are highly toxic and can have detrimental environmental impacts, poisoning rivers in England and killing millions of bees.

So, what alternatives do we have?

Lauren Becks from Girls Gone Raw joins us again, talking DCM.

Really exciting, and under-reported, new developments about older (and misleading) FDA research regarding DCM.

https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/outbreaks-and-advisories/fda-investigation-potential-link-between-certain-diets-and-canine-dilated-cardiomyopathy

What is DCM? Canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). It's a primary disease of cardiac muscle that results in a decreased ability of the heart to generate pressure to pump blood through the vascular system.

What foods cause DCM in dogs? There has been a lot of buzz about the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) statements alerting pet owners about a possible link between dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a type of heart disease, in dogs eating diets containing peas, lentils, potatoes and other legume seeds as main ingredients.

And we are here to put an end to this faulty, misleading research. Why? There are BIG questions around the reporting vets to the research, and how, ultimately, the research has turned into an opinion piece, funded by large pet food companies.
