Some books are brilliant. Some are brutal. And some leave you too exhausted to imagine starting them again.

Jim and Zach discuss the science fiction, fantasy, and horror books they’re reluctant to reread—and why. From graphic content and emotional devastation to demanding prose, slow pacing, and the sheer commitment of a lengthy series, what makes a book a “once was enough” experience?

Being on this list doesn’t necessarily mean a book was bad. Sometimes a powerful reading experience stays with you precisely because you don’t want to repeat it. And everyone’s limits, tastes, and reasons differ.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that's brilliantly written... but absolutely MISERABLE to read?! Is it possible to recognize a book as a literary masterpiece while not particularly enjoying the experience? That's exactly the dilemma Jim faces in this spoiler-lite review of ANGEL DOWN, the 2025 historical fantasy/horror novel by Daniel Kraus!

Set amid the mud, blood, and unimaginable horrors of World War I, ANGEL DOWN follows a group of soldiers sent into No Man's Land on a grim mission, only to encounter something extraordinary—and possibly supernatural. What follows is a disturbing exploration of humanity, morality, faith, and the horrors of war.

Oh, and did we mention that the ENTIRE NOVEL IS ONE SENTENCE?!

Seriously. Nearly 300 pages. ONE. SENTENCE.

Having previously loved Daniel Kraus's work completing George A. Romero's THE LIVING DEAD, Jim was intrigued by this ambitious novel, especially after its Pulitzer Prize recognition. But did its literary brilliance translate into an enjoyable reading experience?

In this review, Jim explores:

📖 The fascinating blend of historical fiction and supernatural fantasy

⚔️ The horrifying realism of World War I trench warfare

👼 The mysterious being at the center of the story

✍️ The remarkable—and occasionally exhausting—one-sentence writing style

🏆 What makes this novel worthy of such prestigious literary recognition

😬 Why Jim respects this book far more than he actually enjoyed it

Is ANGEL DOWN a masterpiece? A miserable reading experience? Or somehow BOTH?

And most importantly... should YOU read it?

This review is SPOILER-LITE, so you can watch without having the novel's major revelations ruined!

COMING SOON: Jim joins fellow content creators Derek (D&J's Epic Quest) and Matt (Geaux Read Books) for a FULL-SPOILER discussion of ANGEL DOWN. Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss that conversation!

💬 LET'S TALK!Have you read ANGEL DOWN? Did you love it, hate it, or find yourself somewhere in between? And what's a book you've read that you respected more than you enjoyed? Share your thoughts in the comments!

How did I miss THIS movie for more than 15 years?!

There are plenty of horror thrillers out there. Some are fantastic, some are forgettable, and some make you wish you could get those 90 minutes of your life back. But every once in a while, you stumble across a hidden gem that completely blows away your expectations!

That's exactly what happened when I watched TRIANGLE (2009), the psychological horror mystery written and directed by Christopher Smith and starring Melissa George.

What starts as a seemingly straightforward survival thriller about a group of friends stranded at sea quickly becomes something MUCH more interesting. A mysterious ocean liner, an increasingly unsettling atmosphere, shocking twists, and a story that will have you questioning everything you think you know!

And that ENDING?! WOW.

In this SPOILER-LITE review, I'll share:

🔹 Why I finally watched this overlooked horror thriller

🔹 The surprisingly intelligent storytelling that caught me completely off guard

🔹 Five reasons TRIANGLE deserves your attention

🔹 Three reasons it might NOT be your kind of movie

🔹 Why this film's twists, performances, and ending left such a lasting impression

And don't worry! I'm being VERY careful not to spoil the movie's biggest surprises. Trust me, this is one you want to experience knowing as little as possible!

If you're a fan of psychological horror, suspenseful mysteries, clever plot twists, or movies that leave you thinking long after the credits roll, TRIANGLE might be exactly what you're looking for.

💬 LET'S TALK! Have you seen TRIANGLE? Did it blow your mind, or did it leave you scratching your head? And what's YOUR favorite overlooked horror thriller? Drop your thoughts and recommendations in the comments! Please keep major spoilers out of the comments for first-time viewers.

"I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubble gum!"

That legendary line might be the most famous thing about John Carpenter's 1988 science fiction cult classic THEY LIVE, starring professional wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. But beneath the cheesy dialogue, outrageous fight scenes, and low-budget alien effects lies a surprisingly thought-provoking movie with messages that might be even MORE relevant today than they were nearly 40 years ago!

In this spoiler-lite review, Jim takes his first complete journey through THEY LIVE, a movie he's known about for decades but somehow never sat down to watch from beginning to end.

Was this overlooked sci-fi classic worth the wait? Does its commentary on consumerism, media manipulation, conformity, and humanity's willingness to embrace comfortable illusions still resonate today? And perhaps most importantly, does the actual MOVIE hold up, or have its ideas aged considerably better than its filmmaking?

We'll explore:

🕶️ The fascinating premise of a secret alien invasion hiding in plain sight.

👽 How a $3 million science fiction movie created some unforgettable imagery.

💪 Roddy Piper's transition from professional "wrassling" to Hollywood leading man.

🥊 One of the most ridiculously entertaining fistfights in movie history!

📺 The movie's surprisingly relevant commentary on advertising, manipulation, and society.

🎬 Five reasons to watch THEY LIVE—and three reasons you might want to skip it!

Jim also shares why he's glad he finally experienced this cult classic, even if the movie itself didn't quite live up to its legendary reputation.

Sometimes the most frightening thing isn't discovering that you've been deceived. It's realizing how comfortable you've become with the deception.

And sometimes... all it takes is a pair of sunglasses to see the truth!

💬 JOIN THE CONVERSATION!

Have you seen THEY LIVE? Do you consider it a genuine science fiction masterpiece, or is its cult status built around a handful of memorable scenes? Do you think John Carpenter's warnings about society are even more relevant today?

And what's YOUR favorite overlooked science fiction movie from the 1980s?

THIS IS MIDDLE GRADE?! Eric Haan's Drakenaarde Chronicles Just Got DARK!

Dragons! Mysterious Sea People! Dangerous wizards! Shocking revelations! And... DEATH?! Wait a minute, isn't this supposed to be middle-grade fantasy?!

In this spoiler-lite review, Jim dives into Giffy and the Sea People, the fourth installment in Eric Haan's The Drakenaarde Chronicles. And things are getting SERIOUS!

Following the dramatic cliffhangers of book three, Eric takes readers on an unexpected journey into Giffy's mysterious past, revealing surprising details about one of the series' most endearing characters. But once the story returns to the main timeline, the danger escalates dramatically as our heroes encounter the Sea People, dragons, and that dastardly wizard Rankin!

Jim explores FIVE reasons to read this book, including its wonderful character development, expanding fantasy world, excellent pacing, Christian themes, and increasingly serious stakes. But he also examines THREE reasons some readers might want to skip it, including questions about how naturally the faith-based elements fit into the narrative.

As a longtime friend of Eric Haan, Jim has followed this series from the beginning. But friendship doesn't guarantee a positive review! Does Eric deliver another winner, or has The Drakenaarde Chronicles finally stumbled?

And perhaps most importantly... is it pronounced GIF or JIF? Because this book FINALLY explains why Giffy's name is pronounced the way it is!

Join Jim for an enthusiastic, thoughtful, and occasionally irreverent look at a fantasy series that's growing more ambitious with every installment.

Cave diving is terrifying enough. Now add something hungry to the water.

In this spoiler-lite review, Jim dives into the 2026 survival-horror thriller The Devil’s Mouth, a movie that combines flooded caves, claustrophobia, questionable decision-making, and a very unwelcome underwater predator.

The critics weren’t particularly kind to this one—but Jim had a surprisingly good time with it! We’ll look at what makes the cave setting so effective, how the film builds suspense, the impressive production work, and why watching otherwise intelligent people make spectacularly stupid decisions can be strangely entertaining.

We’ll also cover the reasons The Devil’s Mouth might NOT be for you, including the violence, creature-feature logic, and those moments when you just want to yell at the screen, “WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!”

Is The Devil’s Mouth an overlooked survival-horror thriller, or did Jim simply enjoy this one more than everyone else?
