Matte Wilson of Siċaŋġu Co joins host Betty Berning to talk about his group’s efforts to promote food sovereignty on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, an area twice the size of Rhode Island with only three grocery stores. Siċaŋġu trains people to grow their food and access fresh produce. The group is embracing its old traditions of regenerative agriculture to promote food production and independence while also creating new traditions.

Betty Berning interviews Robert Elliott of the Veteran’s Farm of North Carolina, a 501(c)3 organization that provides training, support, and equipment to beginning veteran farmers. Robert shares about the training opportunities available to veterans interested in starting a farm, along with his group’s unique equipment usage program that allows farmers to borrow a piece of equipment, similar to how one would check out a book from the library. He also talks about the realities and challenges of farming, including the importance of understanding one’s market before growing a crop or creating a product so that a farm can profit and succeed. He underscores the importance of family support in successful farming operations.
