The story of Daniel 1 demonstrates a partial fast in scripture. In this story eating simply was a way of living counter-culturally. Through this discipline Daniel and his friends are seeking to honor and serve God not Babylon. When we practice abstinence we are also claiming allegiance to God over whatever we give up.
