Publisher's Summary:
Historians have long considered the Battle of Monmouth one of the most complicated engagements of the American Revolution. Fought on Sunday, June 28, 1778, Monmouth was critical to the success of the Revolution. It also marked a decisive turning point in the military career of George Washington. Without the victory at Monmouth Courthouse, Washington's critics might well have marshaled the political strength to replace him as the American commander-in-chief.
Authors Mark Edward Lender and Garry Wheeler Stone argue that in political terms, the Battle of Monmouth constituted a pivotal moment in the War for Independence. Drawing on a wide range of historical sourcesmany never before used, including archaeological evidenceLender and Stone disentangle the true story of Monmouth and provide the most complete and accurate account of the battle, including both American and British perspectives. In the course of their account it becomes evident that criticism of Washingtons performance in command was considerably broader and deeper than previously acknowledged.
This is a superb study, large in scope, detailed in content, and insightful in all that it considers A marvelous book. (Robert Middlekauff, author of Washington's Revolution: The Making of America's First Leader)
An extensively researched and well-written study that provides a new and fascinating perspective on the significance of the Battle of Monmouth. (The Journal of Military History)
This is a landmark study of a battle too often overlooked Lender and Stone have set the standard. (Ricardo A. Herrera, author of For Liberty and the Republic)

Drove by the battlefield today go there all the time this book is one of the best
long overdue
I live 50 miles south of the battlefield and have visited and walked the field many times. Over the course of these trips I had occasion to speak to Dr. Gary Stone ( he doesn't know me from Adam ) , and several years ago asked him "when are you going to write your book on the battle "(because I thought he needed to) .He laughed and said I could go into his office and read his three ring binder of notes, because that's as close as he'd probably get. Well I'm happy to say he was wrong. I can't think of anyone in a better position to write ( or in this case, co-author) a book on the Battle of Monmouth. I can't see how this book can be topped.
This is the definitive book on the battle of Monmouth
I visited the Monmouth battlefield two years ago and enjoyed it more than any other Revolutionary War battlefield I have been to. I was a bit loath to purchase this book at first due to the steep price. After reading a preview of it and seeing reviewers praise it, I decided to go ahead and purchase it.
Am I glad I did! This is the definitive book on the battle of Monmouth, and along with Brandywine by Michael Harris is the best book on a Revolutionary War battle I have read yet. I enjoyed the maps and the authors leave nothing out. Every stage of the battle, including a nice order of battle both for the British and American forces. Monmouth was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the war and was fought in brutal heat.
I wish I could revisit the battlefield with this book in hand.
