Excellent read

I gave this book a five star rating, because it was very eye opening to the struggles that occurred to allow animals to be treated as they are now. I highly recommend every animal lover to read this book.

Great history, easy read

Well done concise history of American Revolution, although missing some important factors. There can never be enough short histories like this to inform people who are intimidated by 1000 page books with a lot of minutiae and take many hours to navigate. From the reasons for starting the revolution through to the Constitution, there's a lot of information in 30 pages or so.

I would have liked to read a little more on Benedict Arnold, although his huge contribution at the start, his reasons for his perfidy, and how close he came to changing the outcome would take a few pages to sum up. Read "Benedict Arnold : Patriot and Traitor" by Willard Strerne Randall.

Also, how the Constitution was created allowing slavery without actually using the words "slave" or "slavery". How the slave states dominated Congress and politics because of the 3/5 rule of counting slaves as population, unable to vote and not even being considered citizens with the Dred Scott Supreme Court decision. Read Clifford L. Johnson's amazingly informative "Slavery, America and Lincoln: the deal and its undoing".

A Well Written and Highly Useful Review of American History

I slid every American Citizen has a duty and responsibility to have a basic knowledge of their country's history! This book identifies 50 key and formative events in American history, summarizes the events, and describes the impact(s) of the event on the development ad formation of the great American nation. The book provides the reader with a summary of events that shaped the American society, culture, moral, political, ethnic identity, pride, prejudices, ideals, customs, democratic values and ideals that shape the American identity and view of its role on the world stage. While I feel it necessary to point out that it dangerous to use a book like this as a sole source of a readers knowledge regarding the history of America, it is certain!y an excellent starting place. I am sad to say that most Americans I have encountered have a working knowledge of their nation's history and many who think they do are woefully mistaken. Lowlife of your nation's history is essential to the maintenance of a true democracy! I urge every American to read this book!

everything written in the last chapter has been proven to be pretty much just the opposite

I thought the book had a very liberal slant. If you look back on the Obama administration, everything written in the last chapter has been proven to be pretty much just the opposite. Looking back it will shown to be one of the most corrupt administrations in history.

History wonderfully summarized

I really enjoyed this quick read and highly recommend it to lovers of history. I think there were a couple of typos but nothing major. One complaint..where was JFK? I realize not every president could make it into this and the Kennedys are probably a whole set of encyclopedias worth of writing but would have been nice to have something said about his time in office.

Its a quick, easy read that gives some insight on the 50 covered events. It's interesting which events were included and excluded. No mention of Native Americans other than helping Jamestown settlers and the Pilgrims. No mention of Spanish settlement in the Southwest, the Texas war of independence or the Mexican War. I don't recall any mention of the Louisiana Purchase. No mention of Fascism in WWII.

Lost Plantations ... AND their long lost stories!

Wow. This was a LOT more than I expected! Not just filled with architectural descriptions as the title might imply - but includes MANY awesome stories and facts about life on the individual plantations - most of which I guarantee you have not read elsewhere, ...unless you have a whopping huge library.

It really made it quite interesting with all these behind the scenes goings on! Hardships, frivolity, sadness, ingenuity and determination, and certainly not the way Hollywood portrays it! I learned LOTS of things that I never knew concerning how things were done back in the day.

Of course for the purist history buffs, there are also oodles of the who, what, wheres, names, dates, and places as well. And believe it or not, that was even fascinating too, hearing about how certain properties were acquired - stolen - or lost!

I thought the narrator did a great job. It was like you were getting a personally guided tour from one of the long time local historians. Pleasant mature voice. I can almost see him standing there wearing a white linen suit as he points to one of the buildings on the sprawling plantation. Lol.

Although I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request in exchange for my voluntary review, I can honestly say that I enjoyed this one.

Southern Charm

Lost Plantations of the South is one of those books where you think this just isnt going to be for me. Then next thing you realize is youre halfway through and talking to your friends about Southern charm, Southern architecture, and the Southern way of life. For me it was the history of each of the plantations and homes covered in the book. Marc Matranas research and writing take you through the lives of each of these homes and John Burlinson brings it to life with a twinge of Southern charm.

An excellent listen, yall.

Insightful look into the antebellum slave market

Walter Johnsonâs award winning book, published in 1999, takes a cultural history approach to his study, arguing that the slave market, not the plantation, is the defining feature of slavery in the south. Johnson notes the contradictory nature of the system: the bodies of slaves are assigned a value, but those same bodies are people, not things. Furthermore, in order to do this, slave-sellers use a system of categorization based on physical attributes (skin color, gender, stature). This paradoxical process necessitates the acknowledgement of their individuality as human beings, while, at the same time, it turns them into commodities and property. (Johnson, 5-8) The author also noted that a central piece of his complex argument is slaveholders âoften represented themselves to one another by reference to their slaves.â (13) Lastly, Johnson argues that the slaves had some agency in the process by attempting to glean information about their potential owner and in the way they present themselves and answer questions during the sales process.

While the historiography on slavery is often written from the vantage point of the plantation or the slave community, Johnson is the first to insist that the purchasing of slaves was fundamental to what slavery was. In this, he differs from historians such as Eugene D. Genovese whose focus is on the community the slaves create. Having said that, Johnson covers some of the same ground as Genovese (paternalism) and influences other historians such as Stephanie Smallwood whose more recent work also talks about the violence of slavery in Saltwater Slavery: A Middle Passage from Africa to American Diaspora, 2009.

Moreover, when it comes to evidence, Johnson primarily relies upon slave narratives. The author does acknowledge that while there are problems with these (amongst which are their obvious use by abolitionists of the day as political propaganda against the system), by using sources produced by slaveholders and visitors to the south along with the narratives, it is possible to interrogate and authenticate the latter. (Johnson, 11) Johnson also relies upon two hundred court cases of disputed slave sales that went before the Supreme Court of Louisiana, letters by slaveholders, and the sales records generated by the slave trade itself.

Drove by the battlefield today go there all the time this book is one of the best

long overdue

I live 50 miles south of the battlefield and have visited and walked the field many times. Over the course of these trips I had occasion to speak to Dr. Gary Stone ( he doesn't know me from Adam ) , and several years ago asked him "when are you going to write your book on the battle "(because I thought he needed to) .He laughed and said I could go into his office and read his three ring binder of notes, because that's as close as he'd probably get. Well I'm happy to say he was wrong. I can't think of anyone in a better position to write ( or in this case, co-author) a book on the Battle of Monmouth. I can't see how this book can be topped.

This is the definitive book on the battle of Monmouth

I visited the Monmouth battlefield two years ago and enjoyed it more than any other Revolutionary War battlefield I have been to. I was a bit loath to purchase this book at first due to the steep price. After reading a preview of it and seeing reviewers praise it, I decided to go ahead and purchase it.

Am I glad I did! This is the definitive book on the battle of Monmouth, and along with Brandywine by Michael Harris is the best book on a Revolutionary War battle I have read yet. I enjoyed the maps and the authors leave nothing out. Every stage of the battle, including a nice order of battle both for the British and American forces. Monmouth was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the war and was fought in brutal heat.

I wish I could revisit the battlefield with this book in hand.

Actually I have not read this book yet. I ...

Actually I have not read this book yet. I heard an author interview and realized I wanted to own the book.. I am one of many descendants of one of the crewmen on the Mayflower. He remained in the colonies, eventually married and he and his wife had a large family. For several centuries they remained in what is known as New England. I have skimmed thru the book and I am looking forward to this coming Spring when I will have time to sit down and give it my full attention.

Very informative book

I had never heard of the General Slocum before I read O'Donnell's book. It is very well written and researched. The details of corruption and the consequences of the lack of regulation\ enforcement is very resonant in our current political environment. The background of the German community and St Mark's parish; especially the impact of this disaster is very well done. I really found this gutt wrenching story fascinating and its placement in its historical context to be very accurate. Cutting edges, complacency, human error, greed, corruption, etc...I hope the past is not prelude... to our future.

A Page-Turner

As a former New Yorker I was amazed that I hadn't known about the General Slocum steamboat fire. This is a gripping tale which begins with the quiet Little Germany section of town, follows through to the innocent people boarding the steamboat, the horrible disaster, and finally the terrible cost that the neighborhood paid. Well-written and hard to put down. If you have anything to do with New York this book is not to be missed.

Well written history of a horrific steamboat accident that rocked the country in 1904. The description of the events and the consequences that had to be dealt with was saddening to all who have read this book. Very worth while and I recommend this to anyone who likes history or maritime books. You will be glad you took the time..

Tragic story well written

An amazing story of an incident I had never heard of before. How times have changed fomr the early 20th centurh to today. I especially enjoyed finding out more about New York in that period.
