The disciples had heard from witnesses who had seen and talked with him that Jesus had risen. Yet they still were not open to this amazing possibility and his appearance startled them. Jesus showed them his wounds and asked them for something to eat. He reminded them of all that he had told them and all that was written in Scripture. He opened their minds and hearts, and he promised them he would send them the Father’s Spirit.

John’s telling about the appearance of Jesus to the disciples has parallels to the other Gospels, but with John two things stand out. In verses 21 and 22, Jesus breathes the Spirit on this community and sends them out in the same way he is sent out by the Father. His mission is now their mission, with all that it entails. John highlights Thomas role as a doubter during these events. Thomas is stubborn in his need for substantial proof. When Jesus provides him that proof, he professes his faith with his whole heart.

Easter Vigil

The Gospel begins with Jesus giving detailed instructions for his entry into the holy city of Jerusalem. There is an air of triumph to the procession and the greeting by the people, though not quite acknowledging him as Messiah, they honor him as a great prophet.

Jesus sees clearly that his death is near. He explains it is necessary like the new fruit that is produced from the grain of wheat fallen to the ground. He will die but return in glory. There is a seeming reference to his agony in the garden. He is troubled yet knows that he must go on. He turns to the Father, hears his voice and obeys.

The beginning of Chapter 3 in John’s Gospel is a conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee. At the heart of this Gospel, Jesus tells Nicodemus that God’s love is that which will lead the world to salvation. It is a love so great that he gives his only Son not to condemn but to save.

In John’s Gospel, Jesus goes to the Temple early in his ministry. He finds the area of his Father’s house” being used as a marketplace. He is greatly angered by this and forcefully chases the money changers away. In so doing he speaks about the Temple being destroyed and raised up in three days. His disciples do not understand the parallel at the time but remember his words after his Resurrection.

Peter, James and John are again traveling with Jesus, this time up the mountain. They have heard his unsettling prediction of his passion. Now they are given the gift of seeing him in his glory. Peter wants to hold on to that moment. God’s voice is heard a second time. He repeats what he said at Jesus’ baptism but now ads, “Listen to him!”

Mark begins this first chapter by identifying Jesus as the Son of God. In this gospel we see that even the Son of God is subject to temptation and weakness. And though he is confronted by wild beasts, he is protected by the angels.
