Chapter 1:
I’ve lived my entire life in a holler on the outskirts of Wyoming County, West Virginia, deep in the mountains of Appalachia. It’s a place so remote most folks don’t even know it exists on a map. Just a handful of families, and dense, unforgiving woods. This place doesn’t have neighborhoods, doesn’t have sidewalks, and most definitely does not have trick-or-treaters on Halloween. Halloween isn’t a holiday here. It’s a test.

My family, and the others who’ve lived here long enough to know, follow a set of rules on Halloween night. It’s not tradition or superstition. It’s survival. Those who didn’t follow the rules didn’t live long enough to tell anyone about it.

A narration of the short story - 'It was the best Halloween party I've ever had. It traumatized me for life.'

Chapter 1:
It was such an incredible party. Genuinely, if I had to pick out the most happy and wonderful moments of my life, that Halloween party would have been one of them. That's why it hurts so much to remember it. It makes me want to break down crying whenever I think about the terrible, awful thing that happened right under our noses, and how none of us even noticed. It feels so obvious, looking back on it now. Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose.

I wouldn't say I'm a particularly unsocial person, I think I get along with people quite well once I've gotten to know them, but something about making that first step of initial contact just always seemed so difficult. I always felt incredibly awkward being introduced to strangers, and while I can mask that discomfort fairly well, it does mean that I tend to adopt a slightly stilted and formal attitude whenever I'm meeting new people.

Chapter 1:
Tracy doesn’t hate people on purpose. She’s not like that. It’s her paintings. They hate people. I remember her very first one. She was still a kid. She painted a scantily clad woman sitting cross-legged in a field of tall grass, a cluster of threatening clouds looming overhead.

It was quite remarkable; the woman’s auburn hair blowing wistfully in the breeze, as she gazes across the minty meadow stretching over the languid landscape. However, upon closer inspection, something about it was deeply disturbing. For starters, the clouds were moving. It took a while to notice. They’d sift along gingerly, like unholy apparitions, high above the woman in the wayward dress.

My sister was proud of it. So were my parents, who quickly pointed out my obvious lack of artistic merit. Hell, I could barely scribble a stick person, let alone a full-sized painting with blended colors, depth and ingenuity. No one knew how she did it.

The detective sighed, and did not answer. His eyes were tired, haunted.

"Just help us get to the bottom of this," he said.

"Okay," I answered. "I'll do my best."

I could hear the tremor in my voice. I hadn't stopped shaking since it happened. I'd had a strong drink to settle my nerves. It hadn't worked.

"Let's start at the beginning," said the detective. "You were having a Halloween party."

“What is that? A hair?”

“I found it in our bed.”

He looked from me to the hair, then back again. “Are you saying… you think I’m cheating on you?”

"Being poor is tough, but it hits especially hard during the holidays. Halloween is the first reminder that you don't have the disposable income for your kid's happiness.

I took Austin down to a local thrift store we visited frequently. They had a rack of reject costumes from supermarkets, a few cheap latex masks, corny novelty party hats and one very well made green and yellow bellied dragon costume that looked like it could fit Austin and Austin only, sitting alone next to a golf bag full of hockey sticks.

It was painstaking detailed- it had scales that actually shimmered, interlocked in tiny emerald shields, each with their own special symbol. Hard like crystal, lighter than glass or even plastic. It was cute enough to make adults smile and remarkable enough to finally make my poor son the envy of all the rich kids at his school."

I don’t know what to do in my situation. If any of you have heard anything similar to what we’re going through, please tell me.

I’m a 17 year old high school student. I’d say I’m pretty average; I mostly spend my time with friends or playing baseball for the high school team, though if they were any better I’d probably be one of the first players to get cut.

Earlier this year I walked into school and saw a new girl reading a book in my homeroom. I live in a small town located an hour’s drive from Indianapolis, so a new girl, especially one as cute as this one, was sure to draw my attention.

I walked up to her and stuck out my hand. “You must be new,” I said. “I’m Matt, nice to meet you.”

The thing about Jake and Kate is that, like most couples my age, they tend to tell too long of stories. I know this is a minor inconvenience, but after a while, it starts to get irritating. I think they picked it up from Florence, my ex-fiancée.

She told the longest stories. When our friend group first got together, she convinced everyone that we should be the kind of adults who had dinner parties and told very long stories. I think she thought that made us look smarter. Everyone played along, but I refused to. I keep my stories brief. 

But, on the night of our most recent dinner party, Jake and Kate didn’t tell any stories at all.

Chapter 1:
April fools has passed this year, and after two years, I’m finally ready to talk about what has been going on the 1st of April.

It was the first of April two years ago, so of course, I didn’t believe my brother when he walked into my room with a sullen face and said, ”Our parents. Fuck. They, uh, they were in a car accident. Dad’s already dead, and they said mom doesn’t have a good chance either. Grab your things. We need to go to the hospital now.”

I let out a nervous laugh, thinking he was just trying to get me with an especially messed up April fool’s joke. He was always the one that joked around a lot.

When I realized the serious look on his face remained the same, my laughter was soon replaced with the realization that he was completely serious.

“What the fuck?” I screamed.

I locked eyes with Jessie’s discovery in the ditch — a woman’s corpse.
