Abortion! A Canadian issue. 

When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first became leader of the Federal Liberal Party candidates with personal pro-life views were banned from running under the Liberal banner - a first in Canadian political history.

During the last federal election campaign, the Liberals promised to revoke the charitable status of pregnancy care centres. This issue is now at the forefront for pregnancy care centres across the country.

Abortion has been legal in Canada up until birth for over 35 years since the 1988 Supreme Court ruling that struck down existing laws as unconstitutional. 

Abortion is taxpayer-funded regardless of personal beliefs. Pregnancy care centres are largely supported by pro-life Canadians who believe in their mission. 

Addressing the issue are Dr. Laura Lewis, executive director of Pregnancy Care 

Canada, and Linda Baartse, executive director of the Pregnancy Care Centre in Toronto.

The faith community in Canada is a vibrant part of the fabric of our nation. 

Over 65% of Canadians identify with a faith. 

In 2021, 53.3% of Canadians identified as being Christian, with Catholics, United, and Anglicans making up the largest portion.

Across Canada, there are an estimated 27,000 church buildings, many regularly giving back to their neighbours to help those in need.

The faith community is the backbone of many food banks, homeless shelters, pregnancy care centres, women's shelters, and more. 

The faith community has played an integral part in the history of our nation and across Canada, many municipalities are beginning to intentionally recognize the significant contributions of the Christian faith to our nation by declaring December as Christian Heritage Month. 

Here to discuss how their church has blessed the needy with millions of dollars worth of usable goods, and their testimony of adopting Christian Heritage Month, is Pastor Randy Neilson of Brampton Hope City.

On October 30th the province of Quebec made medical assistance in dying (MAiD) available to those with dementia and cognitive decline. This, after the federal government delayed such expansion nationally until 2027.

An estimated 70,000 Canadians are expected to die by MAiD as of the end of 2024. 

MAiD is now a leading cause of death nationwide and Canada has some of the broadest laws on MAiD globally.

How far should this go?

Should all of Canada follow Quebec’s lead and legalize MAiD for those fighting mental illness?

Joining us this week to discuss are Amanda Achtman, journalist, filmmaker, and advocate (Dying to Meet You Project), and Rebecca Vachon, (Program Director of Health at the policy think tank Cardus).

Even prior to COVID-19, the issue of health was one of the top priorities for Canadians.

Health transfer payments are the single largest financial transfer that happens in our nation currently, with $83.9 billion being received by the provinces and territories in 2021.  

Some of the leading causes of death in Canada are cardiovascular disease and cancer, specifically lung cancer.  

The good news is that these, and other diseases, can often be mitigated through healthy lifestyle choices. With an aging population in some regions of Canada, and with so many on the edge because of what we’ve been going through with COVID-19, this is an amazing time to have an uplifting conversation about health and wellness.  

Kimberley Milousis is passionate about this topic.

Canada’s growing housing affordability crisis is regularly in the news. In this episode, we focus on one of the frequently overlooked areas of the housing affordability crisis: youth homelessness. We will discuss some of the impacts on youth, not just because of their own choices but also on youth who are aging out of the foster care system and those who are being kicked out of their homes for multiple reasons.

We’re excited to have Dagma Koyi with us today. She is a subject matter expert and the founder and executive director of the REST Centres, an organization that supports youth and young adults in the Peel Region. They offer essential services that help young people secure housing and guide them toward independent living.

In this episode, she will share not only the needs in this space but also some of the root causes of what is taking place. She will discuss the policies she advocates for to help leaders address youth homelessness from a root perspective, considering the broader housing affordability crisis.
